The first part of the talk will explore my work on generalization, integrating developmental and social learning perspectives. Through a Bayesian framework, I show how humans generalize from limited experience, with applications across diverse contexts such as spatial, conceptual, and social environments. This framework also provides empirical support for Alison Gopnik's "cooling off" hypothesis and sheds light on the adaptive mechanisms of social learning in immersive environments. In the second part, I will shift focus to compositionality and cultural evolution-two domains traditionally studied with disjoint methods. I will introduce my ERC-funded project, which offers a mathematical framework for compositional compression as a solution to unite these domains. Despite the current surge in metascience projects, the field lacks disciplinarity and institutionalization, such as dedicated journals, departments, PhD programs. This poses limitations on its development. I argue that this inherent limitation is a necessary consequence of the too narrow methodological and conceptual common ground among metascientists from different disciplines. A more practical development of metascience is envisaged as a network of dedicated metascientific sub-disciplines of established disciplines. As a subdiscipline of psychology, psychology of science would fit within the existing divisions of its discipline, as do philosophy and sociology of science. In this new perspective, psychology of science aims to cover any approach that applies the empirical methods or conceptual frameworks of psychology to understand or support the way science is done. To increase the benefits and mitigate the costs, humans use a variety of strategies to solve collective problems. I will present results from a set of recent experiments using the automatic cognitive testing system developed by Joel Fagot in 2008 and revamped in 2018 that suggest that monkeys are also strategic when solving collective problems. We presented our group of 18 Guinea baboons (Papio papio) first with a coordination problem and then with a cooperation one. We find that baboons develop systematic responses akin to human conventions with the coordination problem and use similar strategies to humans to solve the cooperation problem. These results show that Guinea baboons, like humans, can fine tune their behaviour to the actions of their partners to solve collective problems. Our results support the idea that humans’ capacity for living in large cooperative groups is built upon deep evolutionary roots that allowed individuals to adjust their behaviours to their partners to make the most of group benefits. Players make a series of "Dictator Game" decisions, dividing an endowment between themselves and a recipient. Crucially, recipients are not anonymous strangers but are other community members, presented via photo. By varying the identity of the recipient and whether they will come to know the identity of the donor, we effectively vary the reputational exposure of the donor's decision. We expect that players will be more generous when their decisions have greater reputational stake. This greater reputational stake could come from: the revelation of the donor's identity, the social proximity of donor and recipient, and their respective network positions. To date, we conduct these games in eight rural communities in five countries (India, Colombia, Nepal, Morocco, and Mexico), where we already have full sociodemographic and social network data. This entails over 1800 players and almost 50,000 allocation decisions. While there is substantial cross-site variation in the average amount given (implying different cultural norms), we find strikingly similar effects of social proximity and revelation across sites. Donors give more of their endowment to friends or friends-of-friends, as opposed to more distant recipients. We further find a small but consistent effect of revelation on Dictator Game allocations: donors give more of their endowment when their identity is revealed, as opposed to being kept anonymous. There is greater heterogeneity in how revelation interacts with social proximity and the network position of donor and recipient, the implications of which we discuss. Roles of glutamate and GABA in visual perceptual learning Takeo Watanabe, PhD, The Fred M. Seed Distinguished Professor Visual perceptual learning (VPL) refers to long- term performance changes in a visual task. For over 20 years, I have conducted research on VPL (e.g., Watanabe, Nanez & Sasaki, 2001, Nature; Seitz and Watanabe, Nature, 2003; Tsushima, Sasaki& Watanabe, Science, 2005; Shibata et al., Science, 2011). Although the mechanisms of VPL encoding have been well elucidated, the mechanisms of post-encoding processing have remained elusive. Recently, by measuring concentrations of glutamate (an excitatory neurotransmitter) and GABA (an inhibitory neurotransmitter) using magnetic resonance spectroscopy, we have the mechanisms of important aspects of post-encoding processing mechanisms (Bang et al., Nature Human Behavior, 2018; Tamaki et al., Nature Neuroscience, 2020; Yamada et al., TICS, 2023). In this talk, I will focus on our research revealing mechanisms of retrograde interference, or catastrophic forgetting, defined as the disruption of old learning by newer learning, in both adults (Shibata et al., Nature Neuroscience, 2017) and children (Frank et al., Current Biology, 2022). 2. Sleep and perceptual learning Yuka Sasaki, PhD, Professor We sleep every day, yet the functions of sleep are not entirely understood. Recently, a large body of evidence suggests that sleep is beneficial for various types of learning and memory. Our lab aims to understand how sleep facilitates learning in humans using behavioral measures and non-invasive neuroimaging techniques, including polysomnography and magnetic resonance imaging.
