Date: Wed, March 14, 2012 - 17:00 - 18:30 Location: Department of Cognitive Science, CEU, Frankel Leó út 30-34., Room G15 Can the comprehension of abstract language be rooted in sensory experiences? ABSTRACT: The question of learning the meaning of abstract language (roughly, expressions with no perceptible referents) has been bugging philosophers for thousands of years. More recently, a number of experimental paradigms have emerged trying to shed light on this issue. The basic idea explored in the talk is that people understand abstract (metaphorical) expressions by linking them to sensory or bodily experiences. If this is the case, we should be able to show that these experiences affect people’s interpretation of abstract utterances. (hétfő) 16:00 Az előadás először röviden áttekinti az emberi nyelv korai evolúciójára adott elméleteket, illetve ismertet egy olyan kritériumrendszert, melynek segítségével osztályozni és értékelni lehet ezeket az elméleteket. Ezek a kritériumok az adaptív előny, az őszinteség, a beágyazhatóság, a komplexitás növekedése és az egyediség. Az előadás második felében részletesen ismerteti az emberi nyelv korai evolúciójának a toborzáshoz és a vadászat koordinációjához kapcsolódó elméletét. Az elmélet a korai emberi nyelv kialakulását egy kétlépcsős folyamatként írja le: az első lépcső a toborzás, ami elindította ez egész folyamatot; a második a vadászat koordinációja, amely a már meglévő kommunikációs rendszer komplexitásának a növekedéséhez vezetett. A cél megmutatni, hogy ez az elmélet egyrészt megfelel az előbbiekben ismertetett kritériumoknak, másrészt konkrétan kapcsolható az ismert fosszíliákhoz, támpontul szolgál a korai emberi nyelv kialakulásának időbeli elhelyezésének, és végül, de nem utolsósorban, tesztelhető predikciókkal szolgál. Az előadásokon minden érdeklődőt örömmel lát a Társas-Kognitív Nyelvészeti Kutatócsoport, a DAB Nyelvtudományi Munkabizottsága és DE BTK Hallgatói Önkormányzata. Debrecen, 2014. március 27. All are welcome! "The plan of Quantum Journals: a new scientific publication model" Zoltan Nadasdy, The 'Quantum Journals' will introduce a "new" model for scientific publication. This is a family of journals that will share the same operation principles and software, called the "publication engine". These principles are: - free submission - open review - open access - community control - quantitative evaluation - transparency - no editor or editorial board - quick publication - copyright ownership by authors - cloning and franchising new journals The group of Quantum journals is one (but not the only) response to the increasing dissatisfaction with the peer-review system. Partly, the peer-review system is responsible for publication delays, acceptance-bias and the monopoly of publishers, which not only paralyze the dissemination of information but also reproduce elitism and the geographical imbalance of science and knowledge. The goal is to provide the necessary publication tools for people who actually generate knowledge.

The CEU Department of Philosophy cordially invites you to a talk (as part of its Departmental Colloquium series) byPierre Jacob (Institut Jean Nicod, Paris) on `Assessing radical sophisticated embodiment` Tuesday, 25 March, 2014, 5.30 PM, Zrinyi 14, Room 412 ABSTRACT Several related though distinct questions have been raised in recent philosophy of mind and cognitive science: what makes an individual’s mind or cognition embodied, situated, grounded, embedded, enactive, and extended? I’ll focus on the first question: what makes an individual’s mind embodied? I’ll argue for the following distinctions: embodiment can be uncontroversial or controversial. Controversial embodiment can be moderate or radical. Controversial radical embodiment can be crude or sophisticated. For the purpose of clarifying this last distinction, I will introduce the doctrine of Cartesian materialism construed as the conjunction of (i) the computational representational approach to the mind and mental processes, (ii) the Fodorian trichotomy and (iii) neurocentrism. I shall examine the respective costs of rejecting each conjunct and examine the question how radical sophisticated embodiment relates to the extended mind.
