(H-1111) *Abstract: * Why does the phenomenal appearance of ambiguous patterns reverse spontaneously? What neural events precede and prompt these reversals? Of the two factors have been widely suspected – attention and adaptation – we can rule out the former and fail to find evidence implicating the latter. Surprisingly, we do find such evidence for a short-term memory of visual appearance. Perceptual states and memory states reverse independently and at widely different time-scales. Entitled Minds and Societies, the 2008 Summer Institute will again address an important current topic in cognitive science: social cognition. The Institute is gathering leading researchers on the interface and transition between individual ideas and minds and collective, distributed ones (biosocial psychology, cognitive anthropology, social neuroscience, distributed cognition, extended mind philosophy, etc.). We hope that all will be stimulated by this confluence of perspectives. TITLE: Sex, attachment, and the development of reproductive strategies AUTHOR: Marco Del Giudice ABSTRACT: This paper presents an integrated evolutionary model of the development of attachment and human reproductive strategies. It is argued that sex differences in attachment emerge in middle childhood, have adaptive significance in both children and adults, and are part of sex-specific life history strategies. Early psychosocial stress and insecure attachment act as cues of environmental risk, and tend to switch development towards reproductive strategies favoring current reproduction and higher mating effort. However, due to sex differences in life history trade-offs between mating and parenting, insecure males tend to adopt avoidant strategies, whereas insecure females tend to adopt anxious/ambivalent strategies, which maximize investment from kin and mates. Females are expected to shift to avoidant patterns when environmental risk is more severe. Avoidant and ambivalent attachment also have different adaptive values for boys and girls, in the context of same-sex competition in the peer group: in particular, the competitive and aggressive traits related to avoidant attachment can be favored as a status-seeking strategy for males. Finally, adrenarche is proposed as the endocrine mechanism underlying the reorganization of attachment in middle childhood; the implications for the relationship between attachment and sexual development are explored. Sex differences in the development of attachment can be fruitfully integrated within the broader framework of adaptive plasticity in life history strategies, thus contributing to a coherent evolutionary theory of human development. **** Reminder: INNS Award nominations **** INNS (International Neural Networks Society; http://www.inns.org) has a well established awards program, designed to recognize individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the field of Neural Networks. Up to three awards, one in each of the following categories, are presented annually at IJCNN to senior individuals for outstanding contributions made to the field of Neural Networks. The Hebb Award - recognizes achievement in biological learning. The Helmholtz Award - recognizes achievement in sensation/perception. The Gabor Award - recognizes achievement in engineering/application. In addition, there is the Young Investigator Award: up to two awards are presented annually to individuals with no more than five years postdoctoral experience and who are under forty years of age, for significant contributions in the field of Neural Networks. The INNS Awards Committee is now inviting nominations for the 2009 Hebb, Helmholtz, and Gabor awards as well as the Young Investigator awards.
