Dear Cognitive Folks,
The next Fluencia Party will be on 9th February (Friday) starting at 8.00pm
in Élesztő (Tűzoltó utca close to Corvin metro station).
Info: https://www.facebook.com/events/2013110232260580/
Fluencia is a monthly organized informal "jamboree" for cogsci-,
psychology-related students (undergrads, grads), professors, researchers
from many different universities in Hungary. The idea and motivation are to
facilitate interactions, communication, collaboration among researchers
working here, get to know others and others' interests, topics, etc. And,
of course, to have some drinks and fun in a friendly environment.
Everybody is welcome to attend! If you have any further questions, do not
hesitate to ask.
All the best,
Dezso

Dear all,
The CEU Department of Cognitive Science and the Institute for Advanced Study cordially invite you to its joint event by:
Jelte WICHERTS (Tilburg University)
Date: Wednesday, May 2nd, 2018 - 17:00-18:30
Host: Csaba Pleh
Location: Department of Cognitive Science, CEU, Oktober 6 street 7, room 101.
Title: Overcoming the replication crisis in psychological science
Abstract Several fraud cases, widespread failure to replicate or reproduce seminal findings, the exposition of common biases in the analysis of data, and pervasive error in the scientific literature have led to a replication crisis in psychological science. In this talk, Jelte Wicherts will discuss some of the core findings that point at weak spots in contemporary science and considers the structural and human factors that underlie them. He will delve into the human tendencies that create errors and biases in data collection, analyses, and reporting of research results. He will present several solutions to overcome observer bias, publication bias, researcher's tendency to exploit degrees of freedom in their analysis of data, low statistical power, and errors in the reporting of results.

Title: Bayesian brains without probabilities
Over the past two decades, a wave of Bayesian explanations has swept through cognitive science, explaining behavior in domains from intuitive physics and causal learning, to perception, motor control and language. Yet people produce stunningly incorrect answers in response to even the simplest questions about probabilities. How can a supposedly Bayesian brain paradoxically reason so poorly with probabilities? Perhaps Bayesian brains do not represent or calculate probabilities at all and are, indeed, poorly adapted to do so. Instead the brain could be approximating Bayesian inference through sampling: drawing samples from its distribution of likely hypotheses over time. Only with infinite samples does a Bayesian sampler conform to the laws of probability, and in this talk I show how reasoning with a finite number of samples systematically generates classic probabilistic reasoning errors in individuals, upending the longstanding consensus on these effects. I then discuss how we might determine what kind of sampling algorithm the brain is using, comparing algorithms in their ability to deal with complex probability distributions and to their match with the known characteristics of mental samples.

In exactly two months will start in Vichy, France the
6th School on Universal Logic
http://www.uni-log.org/ULS6
This is a 5-day school with 30 tutorials on all aspects of logic
(historical, philosophical, mathematical, computational)
given by scholars from all over the world.
The school will start by a round table "why study logic?" and will end with a round table "how to publish?"
There also will be a poster session and the school will be followed by a 6-day congress.

Dear Colleagues,
The Cognitive Development Center at CEU is pleased to announce the 9th annual BCCCD meeting in Budapest, Hungary (BCCCD-19, January 3-5, 2019). We welcome symposium and poster submissions from all areas related to cognitive development. Previous BCCCD meetings featured a variety of topics such as comparative cognition, cognitive bases of culture, biological bases of cognition, conceptual learning, perceptual learning, early social cognition, language acquisition, executive functions, metacognition, communication, numeracy, and object cognition.
Although the uncertain situation of our university resulting from ‘Lex CEU’ (more information here) has not yet been resolved, we would like to reassure all prospective participants that the conference will definitely take place under all circumstances.
