Here is the ad: The Department of Psychology at The University of Southern Mississippi is seeking an Assistant Professor for a tenure-track position to begin fall 2015. We seek candidates with a research specialization in cognition, broadly defined. The successful applicant will have a strong empirical research record with potential to attract external funding and an interest in both undergraduate and graduate teaching. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. The position is contingent upon funding. The Department of Psychology, designated as one of six Centers of Excellence in the university, is a growing and dynamic department, with 35 full-time faculty lines and approximately 630 undergraduate majors and 115 graduate students. It is located in Hattiesburg, Miss., a prosperous and growing Pine Belt community about 70 miles from the Gulf Coast and about 100 miles from New Orleans. The department also offers APA-accredited graduate programs in clinical, counseling and school psychology. The project spans the Philosophy and Psychology departments at the University of Warwick. The successful candidate will be a member of the ‘Sense of Commitment’ Research Project team, led by the Principal Investigator Dr John Michael. S/he will conduct research that contributes to the work of the Research Project, and in particular will collaborate in the design, implementation and interpretation of experiments, co-organise a workshop that will form the basis for a special journal issue or an edited volume, and participate in the project’s outreach activities. Yet, our own knowledge and feelings often limit our ability to take another’s perspective, or know how another feels. Our own knowledge can also limit our ability to recognize our own prior ignorance. These errors occur frequently in children, but also in adults. A challenge for social scientists is to develop tools and methods to study social cognition in children and adults. I will present work exploring social cognition from preschool to old age. Title: Biological Markets and the Evolution of Human Cooperation Abstract: Cooperation is crucial to our survival and social success. People typically choose their social partners (e.g., friends, allies, mates), which allows us to avoid bad partners and preferentially interact with better ones. This creates a biological market where people prefer to associate with others who are willing and able to confer benefits upon partners. In such a market, it pays to compete to be (or appear to be) more willing and able to help than competitors are, causing an arms race over any behaviour that signals these traits - including generosity or pro-environmentalism. Biological markets help us understand why we choose the partners we do, when and why people are cooperative and fair (and to what extent), and why individuals differ on these traits.
