Tájékoztatás a XI. MAKOG résztvevői számára: Nagy örömmel regisztráltuk, hogy igen nagy az érdeklődés a XI. MAKOG konferencia iránt. Csaknem 50 előadás-absztrakt érkezett Magyarország különböző kutatóhelyeiről, továbbá vendégeket várunk a Babes-Bolyai Egyetemről is. A csak résztvevőként jelentkezők száma 40 fölött van, és további érdeklődőket várunk a régió területéről is. Figyelembe véve a budapesti vonat érkezést, a kongresszus jan.30-án csütörtökön 10 órakkor kezdődik, és este 18 óráig tart. A 30-ikai fogadás időpontja: délután 19 óra, Dante Café. Február elsején a kongresszus utolsó napja várhatóan délután 1 óra körül záródik. Az előadások nagy számára való tekintettel a tervezett 30 perc helyett, 15 perc demonstráció és további 5 perc vitaidő áll mindenki számára rendelkezésre. Kivételt képeznek a szekciókat vezető fő téma előadói, akik 40 perces előadást tartanak. Call for Papers: Religion, Cognitive Science and Evolution

Second Annual Conference of the New England Institute for Cognitive Science and Evolutionary Psychology Call for papers: Religion, Cognitive Science, and Evolutionary Psychology At least since the great psychologist and philosopher William James, the issue of religious experience has been the subject of scientific investigation. The conference will apply empirical and theoretical findings from cognitive science and evolutionary psychology, including neuroscience, philosophy, and anthropology to explore the nature of religion and the religious experience from a variety of disciplinary perspectives and methodologies. The New England Institute for Cognitive Science and Evolutionary Psychology (NEI) invites papers for its 2nd International Conference. Papers should explore some aspect of the cognitive and evolutionary basis of religion. The conference is to be held August 12 and 13, 2003 in Portland, Maine. Selected papers will be published in the conference proceedings. Proposals should be received no later than February 1st 2003, and completed papers by April 1st, 2003. A könyvben Stent provides an easily accessible, literate introduction to the ancient quandary of the freedom of the will. He traces its origins and its development by major thinkers, from the dawn of civilization to contemporary philosophers and scientists. Stent argues that Immanuel Kant was right in claiming that the paradox of free will inheres in human reason. Thus our innate pure theoretical reason tells us that a causal chain dating back to the beginning of time determines all happenings in the world (including human willing). Our innate pure practical reason tells us, however, that without being able to will freely, we could not understand ourselves as moral agents. Thus, according to Kant, we have to learn to live with this deep existential paradox as best as we can. In his discussions of the paradox, Stent considers many fields of study that touch on it, such as history, philosophy, biology, physics, evolutionary epistemology, sociobiology, and etiquette. The book succeeds in crossing narrow disciplinary lines without minimizing substantive issues. Gunther S. Stent received a Ph.D. in physical chemistry from the University of Illinois in 1948. Upon being awarded postdoctoral research fellowships by the US National Research Council, he joined the founders of the then nascent (and as yet unnamed) discipline of molecular biology, first at the California Institute of Technology, then at the University of Copenhagen, and finally at the Pasteur Institute of Paris. His affiliation with the University of California, Berkeley, began in 1952 as Assistant Research Biochemist and continues today as Professor of Molecular Biology, Emeritus. Stent's professional experience includes also appointments as Senior Fellow of the National Science Foundation at the Universities of Kyoto and of Cambridge; External Member of the Max Planck Institute for Molecular Genetics in Berlin; Guggenheim Fellow at Harvard Medical School; and Fogarty Scholar in Residence at the US National Institutes of Health. He was elected a member of the American Philosophical Society in 1984. Context affects a wide range of activities in humans and animals as well as in artificial agents and other computer programs. The importance of context is widely acknowledged, and "context" has become an area of study in its own right, as evidenced by the numerous workshops, symposia, seminars, and conferences held recently. CONTEXT, the oldest conference series focusing on context, is unique due to its strong emphasis on interdisciplinary research. Previous CONTEXT conferences have been held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (CONTEXT'97), Trento, Italy (CONTEXT'99), and Dundee, Scotland (CONTEXT'01). Each of these brought together researchers in many disparate fields to discuss and report on research on context-related topics.
