This talk explains the importance of Lakatos? Hegelianism in his masterpiece on mathematical method, Proofs and Refutations, and in his methodology of scientific research programmes. Topics to be discussed include: the historiography of Proofs and Refutations and Hegel?s Phenomenology of Spirit; pedagogical philosophy in Hegel and Lakatos; skepticism in nineteenth-century mathematics; the history of Gödel?s Second Incompleteness Theorem; Lakatos? ?changing logic? of scientific discovery; classical political economy as a research programme; research programmes and criticism of scientific practice; and the continuity of Lakatos? ideas with those of Georg Lukács. The talk summarizes the philosophical content of my book, Imre Lakatos and the Guises of Reason (Duke University Press 2001). ---------------------------------- On Wednesday April 16, I will give a talk titled "Lakatos, Hegel, Hungary" at the Central European University. By Bernard J. Baars Science and Consciousness Review has just published a summary and four commentaries about the significant new article by Francis Crick and Christof Koch, titled A framework for consciousness. Most SCR commentaries in this series have been critical. I understand the criticisms. What may be lost in the debate, however, is an understanding of how far we have come in the scientific study of consciousness, in little more than a decade. In my view, Crick and Koch give us a progress report: Yes, there are many remaining gaps, but we are consistently learning more and more. Consciousness is back on the scientific frontier as a major topic, and there are signs of an early consensus on a number of questions. Perception is a psychological process or capacity which is studied empirically by psychology, and some aspects of our perceptual capacities are now well-understood. What is it, then, that philosophy can contribute to the understanding of perception? Some philosophers have argued that the main role of the philosophy of perception is to explain how perceptions can give us reasons for empirical beliefs. On this conception of the philosophy of perception, the only problems of perception are epistemological. In this paper, I argue against this conception, and argue that (regardless of the answer to these epistemological questions) there is another problem of perception, which is the result of a conflict between some fundamental assumptions contained in our ordinary concept of perception. The worry here is not that perceptions will not justify belief, but that our concept of perception is incoherent. I examine the intentionalist and disjunctivist solutions to the problem, and present some considerations in favour of intentionalism. ___________________________________ The 60-minute lecture is followed by a 10-minute break. Krueger and David C. Funder ABSTRACT: Mainstream social psychology focuses on how people characteristically violate norms of action through social misbehaviors such as conformity, obedience, and failures to help. Likewise, they are seen to violate norms of reasoning through cognitive errors such as misuse of social information, self-enhancement, and an over-readiness to attribute dispositional characteristics. The causes of this negative research emphasis include the apparent informativeness of norm violation, the status of good behavior and judgment as unconfirmable null hypotheses, and the allure of counter-intuitive findings. The shortcomings of this orientation include frequently erroneous imputations of error, findings of mutually contradictory errors, incoherent interpretations of error, an inability to explain the sources of behavioral or cognitive achievement, and the inhibition of generalized theory. Possible remedies include increased attention to the complete range of behavior and judgmental accomplishment, analytic reforms emphasizing effect sizes and Bayesian inference, and a theoretical paradigm able to account for both the sources of accomplishment and of error. A more balanced social psychology would yield not only a more positive view of human nature, but also an improved understanding of the bases of good behavior and accurate judgment, coherent explanations of occasional lapses, and theoretically-grounded suggestions for improvement. Funder ABSTRACT: Mainstream social psychology focuses on how people characteristically violate norms of action through social misbehaviors such as conformity, obedience, and failures to help. Likewise, they are seen to violate norms of reasoning through cognitive errors such as misuse of social information, self-enhancement, and an over-readiness to attribute dispositional characteristics. The causes of this negative research emphasis include the apparent informativeness of norm violation, the status of good behavior and judgment as unconfirmable null hypotheses, and the allure of counter-intuitive findings. The shortcomings of this orientation include frequently erroneous imputations of error, findings of mutually contradictory errors, incoherent interpretations of error, an inability to explain the sources of behavioral or cognitive achievement, and the inhibition of generalized theory. Possible remedies include increased attention to the complete range of behavior and judgmental accomplishment, analytic reforms emphasizing effect sizes and Bayesian inference, and a theoretical paradigm able to account for both the sources of accomplishment and of error. A more balanced social psychology would yield not only a more positive view of human nature, but also an improved understanding of the bases of good behavior and accurate judgment, coherent explanations of occasional lapses, and theoretically-grounded suggestions for improvement.
