F E L H Í V Á S Ezúton szeretnénk felhívni minden, a biológiai látórendszerek kutatása és modellezése iránt érdeklődő kolléga figyelemét az Eötvös Loránd Tudományegyetem, Kognitív Pszichológiai Tanszékén megrendezésre kerülő Magyar Látás Szimpóziumra. A látáskutatás a retinába belépő fényinformáció elektromos kódolásától az ezen információnak az agykéregben történő (kognitív) megértéséig húzódó komplex folyamatot vizsgálja interdiszciplinális módon, az idegtudományok, a kísérletes pszichológia és a számítógépes analízis és modellezés eszközeivel. A Magyar Látás Szimpózium másfél évtizede rendszeresen megrendezésre kerülő esemény, melynek házigazdája idén az Eötvös Loránd Tudományegyetem, Kognitív Pszichológiai Tanszék. A szimpózium kiváló lehetőséget nyújt a hallgatóság számára nemzetközi szintű előadásokon való részvételre és személyes kontaktust teremtésére a szakma hazai és külföldi képviselőivel. A szimpózium a következő formában kerül megrendezésre. I. Cím 17. Magyar Látás Szimpózium II. Időpont, időtartam, hely 2011 december 19, hétfő, egy nap, Eötvös Loránd Tudományegyetem, Pedagógiai és Pszichológiai Kar, 1075 Budapest, Kazinczy u. 23–27. III. A szimpózium célja A szimpózium fő célja, hogy fórumot, találkozási lehetőséget biztosítson azon hazai és külföldön dolgozó kutatóknak (neuroanatómusoknak, neurofiziológusoknak, pszichológusoknak és neurális hálózatokat modellező elméleti szakembereknek), akik a látás központi idegrendszeri feldolgozásának problémájával kapcsolatos területeken dolgoznak, valamint a téma iránt érdeklődő diákoknak. Figyelembe véve a téma interdiszciplinális voltát, a szimpózium másik fő célja, hogy megvilágítsa a különböző területeken dolgozó kutatók és a hallgatóság előtt a tradicionálisan elkülönülő kutatási diszciplinák között meglévő kapcsolatokat és az új kapcsolatok lehetőségeit. A harmadik cél a látáskutatás hazai népszerűsítése. IV. Forma A szimpózium formája nagyon kötetlen, nyelve magyar. Minden előadó 15-perces előadást tart, 5-10 perces vitalehetőséggel az előadás után. Célunk nem a formalitás hanem, hogy minél több és minél közvetlenebb párbeszédre adjunk lehetőséget. V. Résztvevők, előadások A szimpóziumon szívesen látott mindenki, aki egyetért annak céljaival, és úgy érzi, hogy abba illő előadást tudna tartani, illetve érdekli a fenti témakör. A szimpózium profiljának megfelelően az előadások a látórendszeri anatómia és fiziológia, vizuális pszichofizika, magasabb szintű látáspszichológia, matematikai és számítógépes modellezés témakörökből állnak össze, de szívesen látunk mindenkit, akit általában a percepció és a felismerés témaköre érdekel. Külön bátorítjuk a témával foglalkozó TDK-s diákok jelentkezését, akiknek ez a fórum nagyon alkalmas arra, hogy előadói tapasztalatot szerezzenek. VI. Jelentkezés, határidők Előadásra és hallgatóként is az itt található jelentkezési lap kitöltésével lehet. Jelentkezési határidő: 2011 november 30. Felkérjük azokat is, akik nem előadóként, hanem hallgatókent szeretnének részt venni, hogy jelezzék részvételi szándékukat a szervezőknek. Ily módon hozzávetőleges képet tudunk alkotni a várható létszámról, és névreszólóan tudunk mindenkit tájékoztatni a további fejleményekről. VII. Díjak, szállás Részvételi díj nincs. A szimpózium egy napos, így szállásra csak azoknak van szüksége, akik hosszabb tartózkodást terveznek. Ilyen esetekben a szállás önköltséges, aminek megszervezésében a szervezők segítenek. VIII. Társas összejövetel Mint ahogyan az előző szimpóziumoknál már megszokhattuk, idén is tervezzük a szimpózium kötetlen vacsorával való zárását. Kérjük azokat is, akik szeretnének részt venni a vacsorán, jelezzék részvételi szándékukat a szervezőknek a jelentkezési lapon. VIII. Times Literary Supplement, 5664 . pp. 22-23. http://eprints.ecs.soton.ac.uk/22962 ABSTRACT: The usual way to try to ground knowing according to contemporary theory of knowledge is: We know something if (1) it’s true, (2) we believe it, and (3) we believe it for the “right” reasons. Floridi proposes a better way. His grounding is based partly on probability theory, and partly on a question/answer network of verbal and behavioural interactions evolving in time. This is rather like modeling the data-exchange between a data-seeker who needs to know which button to press on a food-dispenser and a data-knower who already knows the correct number. The success criterion, hence the grounding, is whether the seeker’s probability of lunch is indeed increasing (hence uncertainty is decreasing) as a result of the interaction. Floridi also suggests that his philosophy of information casts some light on the problem of consciousness. I’m not so sure.

The CEU Department of Philosophy cordially invites you to a talk (as part of its Departmental Colloquium series) by Sacha Golob (University of Cambridge) on `Heidegger, Kant and Pragmatism` Tuesday, 25 October, 2011, 4.30 PM, Zrinyi 14, Room 412 ABSTRACT The purpose of this talk is to develop a new reading and assessment of one of Heidegger’s main claims about intentionality: the claim that propositional intentionality is explanatorily dependent on some prior, non-propositional mode of intentionality. The talk divides into three parts. In part 1, I explain why I find existing accounts of this claim problematic. In part 2, I advance a new reading of the claim. This reading is based on Heidegger’s work on Kant: I argue, amongst other points, that we should sharply distinguish the propositional from the conceptual. In part 3, I offer a philosophical evaluation of the views which I have attributed to Heidegger: I locate his argument in relation to Kant’s work on logic and to contemporary pragmatism.

Employing a visual evoked potential paradigm, we ask whether the extra postnatal visual experience in preterm human neonates leads to a change in the developmental timing of binocular vision. The results suggest that the developmental processes preceding the onset of binocular function are not preprogrammed, and that the mechanisms turning on stereopsis are experience-dependent. Please try to arrive early to ensure you get a seat! The talk will begin promptly at 5. The primacy of means selection over outcome selection information in infants' goal attribution Abstract: To interpret an observed action as goal-directed one can make use of two types of information in a given situation. One type of information consists of the observation that, to achieve the goal, the actor adjusts the action to the situational constraints ("means selection"). The other type of information is the availability of alternative outcomes and the expression of a preference for a particular outcome by the actor's action ("outcome selection"). I will talk about three studies in which we investigated the relationship between the two types of information in infants' goal attribution. The first study showed that ambiguous means selection information prevents infants from relying on unambiguous outcome selection information to interpret an action as goal-directed. The second study demonstrated that infants can transfer their goal-directed action interpretation from a situation that contains only means selection information to a situation in which outcome selection information becomes available. The third study indicated that infants' anticipatory looking toward the outcome of an action is influenced by the ambiguity of means selection information. Together, these studies suggest that means selection information takes primacy over outcome selection information in infants' interpretation of actions. PhD studentships are available for the doctoral program in Cognitive Science at Central European University (CEU), Budapest, Hungary.  Application deadline: 25 January 2012. The Department of Cognitive Science at CEU invites applications for doctoral positions starting in September 2012. This is a research-based training program in human cognition with social cognition and learning as core themes. Research topics include cooperation, communication, social learning, cultural transmission, embodied cognition, joint action, developmental social cognition, strategic decision-making, problem solving, visual cognition, sensory and statistical learning, visual psychophysics, computational neuroscience, and social cognitive neuroscience. Students will follow courses in cognitive psychology, philosophy of mind, cognitive anthropology, computational cognition and linguistics, and will receive practical research training in the laboratories of the members of this new department.
