The CEU Department of Cognitive Science cordially invites you to a talk
(as part of its Departmental Colloquium series)
by
Anna Babarczy, Budapest University of Technology and Economics
on
Can the comprehension of abstract language be rooted in sensory
experiences?
Date: Wed, March 14, 2012 - 17:00 - 18:30
Location: Department of Cognitive Science, CEU, Frankel Leó út 30-34.,
Room G15
Can the comprehension of abstract language be rooted in sensory
experiences?
ABSTRACT: The question of learning the meaning of abstract language
(roughly, expressions with no perceptible referents) has been bugging
philosophers for thousands of years. More recently, a number of
experimental paradigms have emerged trying to shed light on this issue.
The basic idea explored in the talk is that people understand abstract
(metaphorical) expressions by linking them to sensory or bodily
experiences. If this is the case, we should be able to show that these
experiences affect people’s interpretation of abstract utterances. The
talk looks at the evidence we have so far (pro and contra). We're looking
forward to see you there (Frankel Leo u. 30-34) !

he Cognitive Development Center (CDC) at the Central European University
(CEU), Budapest, announces a search for 3 postdoctoral positions,
supervised by Ágnes M. Kovács, György Gergely, and Gergely Csibra.
The CDC is an English speaking lab, which currently employs 6 postdocs
(from 5 countries), 4 graduate students, and research support personnel.
Our research covers broad areas of cognitive development, and focuses
primarily on social cognition. The three posts are funded from various
external sources. Applicants must have a PhD in psychology or a related
field, and a strong record of prior research accomplishments. The
postdoctoral researchers will work on the following projects (some
overlap among them is possible):
Project 1 – job code: 2012/028
Neural bases of receptive communication and social learning in human
infants (PI Gergely Csibra).
The postholder is expected to design and conduct studies with EEG/ERP
and NIRS, as well as with behavioral methods, on the perception and
interpretation of ostensive and referential signals (including words) by
human infants. Familiarity with electrophysiological methodology and
infants research is an advantage. The post is open from September 2012
for two years.
Project 2 – job code:2012/029
Mechanisms of belief attribution (PI Ágnes M. Kovács).
The successful applicant is expected to develop and conduct research
investigating the representational preconditions for understanding
other minds and perform behavioral studies with infants/children/adults,
and possibly NIRS studies with infants. Experience with infant research
and/or NIRS methodology is an advantage. The post is open from September
2012 for one or two years (depends on negotiation).
Project 3 – job code: 2012/030
Understanding intentional agents in typical and atypical development (PI
György Gergely).
The main target of the project is to understand how contingency
detection mechanisms operate in participants with Autistic Spectrum
Disorder (ASD) and in typically developing children and infants. The
postholder is expected to design and conduct studies with ASD children
and adults as well as typical controls. Experience with developmental
research, eye tracking methodology and atypical populations is an
advantage The post is open from January 2013 for 15 months.
Compensation is commensurate with experience. However, we offer a
competitive salary, as well as a dynamic and international academic
environment.
Applicants need to submit:
- a full CV,
- contact address for 2 references, and
- a cover letter specifying the applicant's preference among the three
positions.
Please send your complete application package, including the above
relevant job codes in subject line (e.g. 2012/028), to: advert(a)ceu.hu
Application deadline: June 30, 2012
Informal inquiries about the positions could be addressed to György
Gergely (gergelygy(a)ceu.hu), Gergely Csibra (csibrag(a)ceu.hu), or Ágnes M.
Kovács (kovacsag(a)ceu.hu).
Central European University (CEU) is a graduate research-intensive
university specializing primarily in the social sciences. It is located

Kedves mindenki,
statisztikai szoftverek beszerzését fontolgatjuk (MTA NYI), ez ügyben
kérdezem, hogy bárkinek van-e tapasztalata a Stata nevű programmal (
www.stata.com). Elég felhasználóbarát-e, tudja-e a többváltozós
varianciaanalíziseket, GLM-et, regressziót stb., milyen a grafikus
megjelenítés. Egyáltalán, funkcionalitásban és kezelhetőségben mérhető-e az
SPSS-hez?
Köszönöm előre is,

Dear Colleague,
you will soon receive by paper mail the printed version of the attached poster.
But, in order for students and post-docs to be able to submit a poster and for everybody to profit from the early bird registration, we would really appreciate if you could print the poster and hang it as soon as possible. We attach it in two formats - A4 and A3 - so that you can choose the most appropriate for you.
There are some important changes, e.g. no fees for the Chomsky lecture and online registration for it.
We attach also a list of Trieste hotels where you can stay at discounted rates. When booking specify you are invited to a workshop at SISSA.
Please send this e-mail to other people - in your department and in your country - who might be interested.
Thank you for your cooperation and looking forward to seeing you in Trieste.
Jacques Mehler and Marina Nespor
