The CEU Department of Cognitive Science and the Social Mind Center cordially invites you to its talk by Julie Grèzes<https://lnc2.dec.ens.fr/en/member/635/julie-grezes> (Ecole Normale Superieure, Laboratorie de Neurosciences Cognitives, LNC²) Date: Wednesday, March 28, 2018 - 17:00-18:30 Location: Department of Cognitive Science, CEU, Oktober 6 St. 7, room 101 Action- and attention-related decisions under social threat Evolutionary theoretical accounts suggest that emotional displays serve a communicative function, implying 1) that emotional signals have co-evolved with recipient's decoding skills and behavioral responses, 2) that the recipient's behavioral response should reflect the social function of the perceived expression, and 3) the perceived possibilities for action offered by emotional displays are contingent on recipient's states and capabilities. We experimentally address these assumptions and reveal 1) that the neural sensitivity to threat-signaling emotions is enhanced in both ventral face-selective cortices and in action preparation motor cortices 200 ms following face presentation (El Zein et al. 2015); 2) that there is a selective impact of threat-signaling emotions on the recipient's action and attention decisions: anger elicits avoidance behaviors while fear prompts affiliative approach tendencies (Vilarem et al. under review), and finally 3) that the processing of threat-signaling emotions is influenced by recipient's traits and states. Altogether, these results indicate that emotional displays promote the elaboration of adapted perceptual and action-related decisions. We are looking forward to see you at the talk! The Cognitive Development Center (CDC) at Central European University invites applications for a full time research assistant position. The successful candidate will help the researchers at the Center in designing and conducting studies with healthy human infants, and in analyzing and publishing the collected data. Qualifications:  Successful applicants will have a BA or equivalent degree in any discipline, and will be required to be fluent in both English and Hungarian for oral and written communication as well. Applicants with (1) a degree in psychology, (2) experience with working with babies and children below two years of age, or (3) familiarity with experimental methods in developmental psychology will be given advantage.   What we offer: This is a full time position, available on June 1, 2018, or shortly after, for a fixed term of one year with the possibility of further extension. The post is funded by research grants from the European Research Council. We offer a competitive salary that is commensurate with experience as well as a dynamic and international academic environment. CEU is an equal opportunity employer. Title: Events, Narratives and Memory Abstract: Whether non-human animals can have episodic memories remains the subject of extensive debate. A number of prominent memory researchers defend the view that animals do not have the same kind of episodic memory as humans do, whereas others argue that some animals have episodic-like memory-i.e., they can remember what, where and when an event happened. Defining what constitutes episodic memory has proven to be difficult. In this paper, I propose a dual systems account and provide evidence for a distinction between event memory and episodic memory. Event memory is a perceptual system that evolved to support adaptive short-term goal processing, whereas episodic memory is based on narratives, which bind event memories into a retrievable whole that is temporally and causally organized around subject's goals. I argue that carefully distinguishing event memory from episodic memory can help resolve the debate. The project is part of the Mobile Technology for Infant Social-Cognitive Neuroscience (MOTION) Interdisciplinary Training Network for Innovative Infancy Research, a European Commission ITN project exploring infants’ and toddlers’ actions, gaze direction, and brain activity as they actively explore the world around them. ITNs are international collaborative research and training networks involving several University and private sector partners. The University of Milan-Bicocca is particularly responsible for developing the following 2 research projects. 1. Understanding social interactions in the first years of life. This project will use innovative mobile technologies to document the developmental trajectory of the ability to understand others’ interactions in natural settings, like prosocial behaviours (such as sharing, helping, and comforting) and affective interpersonal touch, thus adding remarkable findings to the social development research field. We will explore when during development and how infants recognise the nature (prosocial, affective) of interpersonal interactions and whether this information can shape infants’ and toddlers’ behaviour towards others and their environment. To achieve this goal, innovative behavioural and neurophysiological techniques will be used alone or in combination. 2. Infant development of emotional mimicry. This project will investigate how infants engaged in social interactions understand others’ emotional behaviors. Using high-density EEG and sEMG, we will test whether imitative or inclusive behaviors are capable to modulate neural processing of facial emotional expressions and facial mimicry responses early in development. Measuring infants’ scanning strategies through an eye-tracking system, we will also assess how the ability to extract statistical regularities from imitative facial expressions is affected by the sociality of the interactions. The successful applicants will receive a competitive salary. As part of their training, successful candidates will be ask to spend some months and develop fruitful collaborations with the other network partners, all having a strong international focus and considered leaders in the cognitive and social development research field. The successful candidates will have Masters-level training in Psychology, Cognitive Science, or Cognitive Neuroscience. We encourage application from candidates with research training in developmental psychology, and especially experience in conducting research with human infants using behavioral and/or physiological measures. Experience with infant eye-movement, sEMG and EEG recording methodologies and/or data analysis is a plus. However, we recognize the rarity of such a combination of skills and will consider applicants with strong willingness and aptitude to learn and develop in the desired area. Important mobility constraints apply: Successful applicants cannot have resided in Italy for more than 12 months in the past 36 months. The position must be taken up no later than October 1st, 2018.
