The CEU Department of Cognitive Science and the Institute for Advanced Study cordially invite you to its joint event by:
Jelte WICHERTS (Tilburg University)
Date: Wednesday, May 2nd, 2018 - 17:00-18:30
Host: Csaba Pleh
Location: Department of Cognitive Science, CEU, Oktober 6 street 7, room 101.
Title: Overcoming the replication crisis in psychological science
Abstract Several fraud cases, widespread failure to replicate or reproduce seminal findings, the exposition of common biases in the analysis of data, and pervasive error in the scientific literature have led to a replication crisis in psychological science. In this talk, Jelte Wicherts will discuss some of the core findings that point at weak spots in contemporary science and considers the structural and human factors that underlie them. He will delve into the human tendencies that create errors and biases in data collection, analyses, and reporting of research results. He will present several solutions to overcome observer bias, publication bias, researcher's tendency to exploit degrees of freedom in their analysis of data, low statistical power, and errors in the reporting of results.
