BRUNCH ABOUT ENDOPHYSICS
at the History and Philosophy of Science Department
Eotvos University, Budapest
on November 12 1996
(Rakoczi u. 5., room 105.)
Organized by:

the History and Philosophy of Science Department, Eotvos University, Budapest
WHAT IS A BRUNCH?
Brunch is a word combining breakfast and lunch and referring to
an informal activity of eating, relaxing, and discussing a selected topic
at length, potentially with a chop in the mouth (not obligatory).
Our brunch begins at 10:00 a.m., ends when the last participant blows out
the candle. Food can be ordered on the fly from several nearby facilities.
WHAT IS ENDOPHYSICS?
Under this term we refer to several loosely related novel approaches
that center on one or another aspect of the observer problem in science,
as approached from an internalist (or observer-in-the-box) standpoint.
Of special interest are issues of completeness, consistency, duality,
and other structural problems of description. Applications range from
the foundations of physics to the epistemology of biology to general
problems of determinism and to a new look at old philosophical debates
such as those about realism and its alternatives.
The Endophysics Home Page (under construction) provides more information
(http://hps.elte.hu/endo.html).
THE PROGRAMME
Dicussion will be convened by George Kampis.
Solicited commentaries from Thomas Breuer, Ladislav Kvasz, and Karl Svozil.
All interested are welcome!

ABSTRACT: This research concerns forms of coding, processing and
learning that are common to many different cortical regions and
cognitive functions. Local cortical processors may coordinate their
activity by maximizing the transmission of information that is
coherently related to the context in which it occurs, thereby
forming synchronized population codes. In this coordination,
contextual field (CF) connections link processors within and
between cortical regions. The effects of CF connections are
distinct from those mediating receptive field (RF) input. CFs can
guide both learning and processing without becoming confused with
RF information. Simulations explore the capabilities of networks
built from local processors with both RF and CF connections.
Physiological evidence for CFs, synchronization, and plasticity in
RF and CF connections is described. Coordination via CFs is related
to perceptual grouping, the effects of context on contrast
sensitivity, amblyopia, implicit influences of color in
achromotopsia, object and word perception, and the discovery of
distal environmental variables and their interactions through
self-organization. In cortical computation there may occur a
flexible evaluation of relations between input signals by locally
specialized but adaptive processors whose activity is dynamically
associated and coordinated within and between regions through
specialized contextual connections.

In 1969 Giovanni Flores d'Arcais convened an international
conference on psycholinguistics in Bressanone, Italy, which became
an immediate culinary success. But in retrospect, it also
marked the rebirth of psycholinguistics in continental Europe. In
1970, the carefully edited proceedings appeared under the title
"Advances in Psycholinguistics". To honour Ino d'Arcais at his 60th
birthday, the original contributors to "Advances" were approached to
present their views on how psycholinguistics, and in particular their
own work, evolved since "Advances". The resulting book is a unique
'petite histoire' of a quarter century of psycholinguistics, with
