The CEU Summer University announces the course
``Representing the world in the developing mind: From objects to context<https://summeruniversity.ceu.edu/developing-mind-2021>``
held between 12 July - 17 July, 2021, in BUDAPEST, HUNGARY
Application deadline: February 14, 2021

BRIEF COURSE DESCRIPTION
How does the developing mind come to represent the world? Young infants have been proposed to use similar sources of information than adults in their object-based attention. From the development of memory over executive function, number cognition, and action understanding to Theory of Mind, studies have assumed that infants have a stable representation of objects, which they enumerate and track according to the perceptual input and maintain despite occlusion.
On the other hand, a number of limitations of early object cognition exist. These limitations, differences between earlier and later abilities, and contextual influences on the representation of objects are highly informative for the characterization of the cognitive mechanisms involved. A focus of the summer school will be how object representations may be influenced by context, such as language or social interactions.
How the continuous perceptual environment is parsed into units also has an impact on how objects are represented and remembered. The summer school will explore how infants perceive and parse the temporal structure of their environment, what role language may play in this, and how this influences their object representation.
The last decade has seen an immense advancement of methodologies in neuroscience, contributing to a better understanding of how mental representations map onto brain function in the adult brain. Very recently, researchers have started to apply these methods to infants, yielding promising avenues for understanding the neural signatures of infants’ object representation, the influences of context, and the developmental trajectories of object cognition.
The summer school aims to discuss the interaction between different factors contributing to object perception and memory, from theoretical and empirical perspectives. The course will bring together different fields of research with the ultimate goal to advance the understanding of how infants form representations of their environment, and how these representations develop throughout childhood.

Budapest was supposed to host ESCAN2020, which later became ESCAN2021.
The current situation requires us to adapt further: while vaccination
has started, planning a travel may still not possible and socializing
may not be safe for all of us.
To allow equal access and stress-free participation for everybody we are
happy to announce that ESCAN2021 goes virtual. Having seen the symposia
proposals and the poster/free presentation abstracts flowing in we are
very excited about the excellent content we'll have.
Our virtual congress platform will provide a transparent environment for
a thought-stimulating and highly interactive program.
The deadline for individual oral / poster submissions has been extended
to 15 March 2021. All accepted presentations / posters will have an
interactive discussion opportunity both by live chat and live video. For
oral presentations, a video not longer than 12 minutes in mp4 format;
for posters, a pdf of the poster and - optionally - a maximum
3-minute-long video in mp4 format will need to be provided by the
authors. Detailed guidance and technical assistance will be provided.
Should you not intend to present in the virtual congress, please
withdraw your abstract in our abstract management system. If you would
like to change your preference ("oral presentation" or "poster"), please
revise your preference in our abstract management system as well.
Satellite and symposia organizers will be contacted shortly regarding
the next steps of preparation.
Registration fees are reduced by 100 EUR. The registration portal will
soon be updated with the new fees and the overall content of the website
is going to be updated in the upcoming days. Please stay tuned for
further news concerning the program and registration.
We invite you from all around the world to join this unique event. Let's
make the best out of the opportunities this year offers - see you at
ESCAN2021!

Title: A neural network walks into a lab: towards using deep nets as models for human behavior
Abstract: What might sound like the beginning of a joke has become an attractive prospect for many cognitive scientists: the use of deep neural network models (DNNs) as models of human behavior in perceptual and cognitive tasks. Although DNNs have taken over machine learning, attempts to use them as models of human behavior are still in the early stages. Can they become a versatile model class in the cognitive scientist's toolbox?

Dear All,
We are delighted to announce that, despite the global pandemic, the XII.
Dubrovnik Conference on Cognitive Science (DUCOG) will go ahead in an
*online* format.
*Conference theme*: Linguistic and cognitive foundations of meaning
*Dates*: May 19-21, 2021 (from 4pm to 9pm CET)
*Venue*: online in both synchronous and asynchronous formats
Language and cognition are intimately linked, but debates about the exact
nature of their relationship still occupy a central focus in cognitive
science. Meaning provides an important window onto the interface between
language and broader cognition: on one hand, language can be viewed as
mapping onto pre-existing concepts, on the other hand, language can be
thought of as a set of cues to meaning. Our invited program brings together
an interdisciplinary set of speakers with diverse theoretical perspectives
and empirical approaches to discuss issues at the interface of language and
cognition within the domain of meaning.
The live program will consist of talks by the invited speakers and
contributed presentations, as well as discussion sessions. We solicit
abstract submissions for two streams of contributed presentations:
(i) talks presented live on topics closely related to the conference
theme, and
(ii) asynchronous presentations in free formats on any topics in cognitive
science.
*Abstract submissions will be accepted until March 31, 2021 with
notifications by April 19th. *Please indicate your preference for live vs.
asynchronous presentation during submission.
