Various kinds of reductionism
Reductionism in the philosophy of science is associated with the
logical positivists' attempt to produce a unified science. In their
eyes, as they disliked ontology, this unity was essentially a matter of
the relation of theories one to another. For those who fear ontology
less, it can be conceived in a more realist fashion. The different
sciences, and many things we say in ordinary, non-scientific language,
are all true of the same physical world. What constraints are there on
theories for it to be possible for them to be different ways of
conceptualising the same reality? Reductionism can be seen as the
principle attempt explain these constraints.
I shall look at the different accounts of reduction that have been
given. First, I shall give a typology of the various accounts that have
been given of the relations between the ontologies of different
theories, stretching from the most reductive to those that are
explicitly emergentist. Second I shall focus on the 'weak reductionism'
defended by
Jerry Fodor in 'Special sciences: the disunity of science as a working
hypothesis', (Synthese, 1974: variously reprinted, including in The
Philosophy of Science, eds Boyd, Gasper and Trout). I shall question
whether this kind of weak reduction is adequate for a naturalist, on the
grounds that it presupposes that the science-producing subject is
external to the world about which he is producing his theories.

The 8th Central European Summer School in Generative Linguistics (CESSGL)

Announcing the 8th free summerschool: as every year: we are organising
a summerschool in Generative Grammar in Central/Eastern Europe, which
has both excellent researchers as teachers and is entirely free (no
enrollement fees). This summer, the accomodation (hostel) is even free
for everybody.
Additionally, there are grants available to cover the travel costs of
Eastern European students.

The deadline for registration is the 15th May.
The school will be held in Nis (Yugoslavia), during two weeks (23 July
to 3 August), and is separated into two parallel teaching tracks:
* one introduction track for people with little background in
(generative) linguistics
* one medium/advanced track for people who already know the basics and
want to get into research topics.
The school offers two weeks of intensive intellectual work in syntax,
semantics and phonology (this summer has a strong morpho-phonological
component), with the following teacher lineup:

Klaus Abels, Arhonto Terzi, Ellie Boyadzeva, Luisa Marti, Orin Percus>
Finally, an important aspect of this school is that it tries hard to

Ime egy kis izelito a kozismert Landau-Lifsic 6.
kiadasabol 1972-bol. A gravitacios hullamokrol
ezeket irja:
"A kolcsonhatasok terjedesenek veges sebessege ...

"A gravitacios hullam tehat eppugy, mint az elektro-
magneses hullam, vakuumban fenysebesseggel terjed."

Aztan kielemzi, milyen tulajdonsagokat hordoznak a
gravitacios hullamok, majd megallapitja: "Az energiat
tartalmazo gravitacios eroter maga is jarulekos
gravitacios ter forrasa." ... "Nagyfrekvencias
gravitacios hullamok eseteben azonban ez a hatas
lenyegesen felerosodik: ... lambda^-2 becsulheto
szorzotenyezot hoz t(ik)-ba." (Ez kb. annyit jelent,
hogy a frekvenciaval aranyos az energiaja.)
"Ha a 'hatteret' teljesen maguk a hullamok hozzak
letre, akkor..." (Szoval ilyen is felvetodott.)
Mar csak egy aprosag hianyzik, pl. hogy valaki
felvesse: a gravitacios hullamok esetleg azonosit-
hatoak az elektromagneses hullamokkal. Ez persze
meg mindig keves, komolyan meg is kellene vizsgalni
a dolgot. Es ez mindannyiunk ugye es felelossege.
