*Causal and probabilistic learning and theory of mind*
Abstract: In earlier work, we applied a causal Bayes net approach to
instances of physical causality, like the "blicket detector". But children's
theories of psychological causality are equally if not more important. I
will report several studies that investigate the role of causal learning in
psychological understanding. In one series of studies we explore how
children use causal learning to segment human action into meaningful units.
In a second series we explore the relation between imitative learning and
causal learning. And in a final set of studies we explore how causal
learning plays a role in the development of children's attributions of
actions to either situations or traits.

Neurocognitive determinants of perceptual awareness in adults and infants
Abstract:
I will present empirical data using behavioral and/or neuroimaging
studies in human adults and infants. My talk will mainly focuses on 4
topics. First, I will talk about the extent and limits of subliminal
perception, in terms of both behavioral and neural influences;
Secondly, I will present new approaches to perception without
awareness through emotional information induced by crowded videos.
Third, I will present some methods for measuring perceptual awareness
in infants; Finally, I will focus on the existence of consciousness
without attention/access, and discuss the alternative partial
awareness hypothesis.

You are invited to comment on the following paper in the National Humanities Center Forum "On the Human" http://onthehuman.org/
DOING, FEELING, MEANING, EXPLAINING
http://onthehuman.org/2011/04/doing-feeling-meaning-explaining/
"The problem of explaining causally how and why we can do what we can do
has lately come to be called the “easy” problem. The mind/body problem
has lately come to be called the “hard” problem. In Doing, Feeling,
Meaning and Explaining, I formulate this as the problem of explaining
how and why we feel. I give some reasons why I think it is impossible to
solve the hard problem, but commentators are invited to give it a go!"

Hogyan működik a privilegizált hozzáférés?
Időpont: április 18, 13:00-14:00
Helyszín: Stoczek utca 2., St. ép, 320. 1111, Bp.
Absztrakt
Előadásomban felvázolom a fontosabb, ugyanakkor egymástól lényegesen különböző elméleteket. A fő hangsúlyt az egyes állapot típusokhoz hozzáférést biztosító mechanizmusok elemzésére és bemutatására szeretném helyezni. Konkrétan a fenomenális tartalmak közvetlen megismeréséről, vélekedéseink transzparenciájáról, a figyelem mentális állapotok megismerésében játszott szerepéről és a következtetési sémák jelentőségéről fogok beszélni. Az általam ismertetett modellek szerint lehetséges egyes mentális tartalmak privilegizált megismerése, és a mentális állapotaink megismerése az érzéki észlelés folyamataitól eltérő jellemzőkkel bír.
