The Rise of Physicalism
Some philosophers have suggested that the recent rise of physicalism
owesmore to fashion than to argument. In response this paper maintains
thatphysicalism is rationally compelling once the causal completeness
of
physicsis accepted. This premise is a highly empirical claim, however,
and indeedone widely rejected by scientists until relatively recently.
Good evidencein favour of the causal completeness of physics has
emerged
only over thelast century. This paper recounts the history of the
causal
completenessclaim, and shows how accumulating evidence, rather than
fashion, has been responsible for the philosophical movement towards
physicalism.
