Five ways of exploring genotype/phenotype relations: a cognitive developmental
perspective.
Absztrakt:
In this talk I will discuss 5 ways in which to explore
genotype/phenotype relations. I will take Williams syndrome (WS) as
my model disorder but argue that the neuroconstructivist approach
applies equally to other genetic disorders. The 5 approaches
involve: computational models of deficits introduced in the start
state vs the end state; the more creative and developmental use of
animal models; patients with genetic deletions similar to WS but
with seemingly normal cognitive phenotypes; the differentiation of
the behavioural vs cognitive phenotype when scores fall within the
normal range; and the importance of focusing on the infant start
state. I conclude by stressing how low-level impairments in early
development have a cascading effect on the higher-level cognitive
outcome.
