Speaker: Hermann Bulf (Department of Psychology, University of Milano–Bicocca, Milano, Italy) Date: 03.25 Friday 14.00 Location: RCNS ground floor lecture hall (1117 Budapest XI., Magyar Tudósok krt 2.) _Abstract_ Visual rule learning in early infancy Rule learning (RL) refers to infants’ ability to extract high-order, repetition-based rules from a sequence of elements and to generalize them to new items. Although some studies have first suggested that RL is specific for language acquisition, innately predisposed to process speech sounds, it has been recently shown that infants’ RL is functioning in the visual domain as well. I will present evidence from a series of studies indicating that infants can readily extract high-order rules from sequences of visual stimuli, even if this ability is constrained by the stimuli to be learned. I will also present some data about the level of abstractness of this visual implicit learning mechanism in early infancy.
