This ability is crucial to develop meaningful internal representations of the structure and physical rules of the surrounding environment. Yet, implicit statistical learning has long been considered as an emerging mechanism in the evolution of humans' higher cognitive functions such as language processing. However, basic unsupervised extraction of relations between elements appears to be a fundamental universal mechanism accessible to most animal species including an insect species, the honeybee. Bees indeed excel at extracting relational rules between visual objects competing with non-human primates. Here I will develop how bees use relations to develop meaningful representation of their environment suggesting convergent competences with primates.
