Can consciousness be reductively explained?
Tuesday, 13. December 2005 6.00pm Zrinyi 14, room 412
Those who answer "No" argue that there is an explanatory gap
between physical/functional facts and facts of consciousness and that
there are reasons why this gap cannot be filled. Among those who answer
"Yes" there are people who argue that explanatory gap can be closed
in principle and yet others who claim to have provided such an
explanation in practice. In this paper I shall consider arguments for
the existence of an explanatory gap, then I shall explore objections to
these arguments and related alternatives. One of these alternatives
seems more plausible to me.
