The CEU Department of Cognitive Science cordially invites you to its talk by: Prof. *Sunae Kim* (Eötvös Loránd University) [web <https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Sunae_Kim5>] Title: *Children's learning from others and teaching others as selection of their own social partners* Date: Wednesday, 17 October 2018 Time: 17:00-18:30 Location: Department of Cognitive Science, CEU, Oktober 6 st. 7, room 10 Abstract: Humans engage in various forms of social interactions and are selective of their own social partners. In this talk, I will first present data addressing how young children select social partners in their learning and teaching particularly asking what might guide and modulate children’s selection of their learning partners. First, I will demonstrate that children’s selection of their learning partners is not an all-or-none kind of problem. Rather, they seem to be flexible, considering whether someone can be a potentially valuable social partner. Second, children's selective learning and teaching do not show parallel performance. Moreover, their selective learning and teaching are modulated by culture. Next, turning to metacognitive aspects of learning and teaching, I will present data showing that young children’s sensitivity to their own knowledge states is enhanced in social interaction e.g., an informing context. Together, I argue that children’s notion of learning partners is both facilitated and constrained by social and cultural contexts. Finally, I will present preliminary data exploring a developmental precursor to a sensitivity to own uncertainty. We are looking forward to see you. I will argue that human visual perception is further prepared to represent socially relevant (spatial) relations among multiple entities. This so-far uncharted property of human perception substantiates the construct of social vision, whereby the result of perceptual analysis is not just shape recognition, but information ready for inferential operations in social cognition. I will discuss the preparedness of human visual perception to represent configurations of multiple entities in spatial positioning that cues interaction, focusing on three empirical phenomena. First, under conditions of low visibility, two bodies facing each other (seemingly interacting) are recognized more accurately and faster than two nonfacing bodies. Moreover, the recognition of facing body-dyads is disproportionately impaired when those stimuli are inverted. Privileged recognition and inversion effect suggest specialized mechanisms for visual perception of interacting bodies. Second, in a visual search task, two facing (i.e., seemingly interacting) bodies are processed more efficiently than two nonfacing (i.e., non-interacting) bodies. In showing that the visual search mechanism has rapid access to relations across multiple objects, this research highlights the perceptual advantage of facing over nonfacing dyads. Functional MRI results will further support this observation. Third, a series of experiments based on a preferential looking paradigm reveals discrimination of facing versus nonfacing bodies, in 6-months-old infants. Thus, the visual sensitivity to interacting bodies seen in adults, does not require decades of exposure to social contexts; it could rather be a signature of early developing perceptual mechanisms that contribute to the construction of mature social cognition. Multi-body perception, where human observers attain a fast, initial appraisal of possible relations in a scene, may be the crucial mechanism that channels body perception into social cognition; in other words, the (missing) link between perception and cognition. Title: From vision to cognition and action In the last few years computer vision has made tremendous progress in answering questions such as "what is where" in an image. But human abilities to act on and reason about the visual world exceed current systems by far. The first part of the talk will present recent work on the exquisite adaptability of the visual system's active role in acquiring information in one of the most often carried out visual behaviors, i.e. blinking. Subjects were able to learn environmental regularities and adapted their blinking behavior strategically to better detect future events, based on their current beliefs. The observed behavior is in accordance with a computational model based on optimal control trading off intrinsic costs for blink suppression with task-related costs for missing an event under perceptual uncertainty. The second part of the talk will revisit a set of classic cognitive vision tasks, the Bongard problems. Using a formal language representing complex visual concepts and Bayesian inference, complex visual concepts can be induced from the examples that are provided in each Bongard problem, very similar to previous work on the rational analysis of rule-based concept learning. Contrary to other concept learning problems the examples are not random in Bongard problems, instead they are carefully chosen to communicate the concept, hence requiring pragmatic reasoning. Taking pragmatic reasoning into account we find good agreement between the concepts with high posterior probability and the solutions formulated by Bongard himself. While this approach is far from solving all Bongard problems, it solves the biggest fraction yet. This is joint work with Stefan Depeweg, Frank Jaekel, Stefan Helfmann, and David Hoppe.
