Street 7, room 101 Neural control of human defensive reactions to social threat The ability to control automatic emotional actions constitutes a critical component of emotion regulation during socially threatening situations. For instance, under acute social threat, goal directed decision-making depends largely on the capacity to override automatic defensive actions such as freezing reactions or fight-or-flight actions. Distinct parts of the frontal cortex are implicated in regulating these defensive reactions. I will present a number of experimental paradigms by which we assessed neural control over these defensive reactions in humans by combining decision tasks with neural and autonomic measures. The first series of studies indicates that down-regulation of amygdala activity by the anterior prefrontal cortex (aPFC) is involved when people need to override their automatic social approach-avoidance action tendencies. I will show that the functioning of this neural circuitry is sensitive to individual differences in social anxiety and aggression, and I will discuss manipulations of this neural circuitry by steroid hormone administration (i.e. testosterone) and brain stimulation (TMS). The second series of studies investigates the shift from parasympathetically-dominated freezing to sympathetically-driven fight-or-flight reactions in humans. Like freezing in many animals, human freezing is accompanied by bradycardia and associated amygdala projections to the midbrain (periaqueductal gray). The shift from freezing to action involves tachycardia and associated recruitment of the perigenual part of the anterior cingulate cortex (pgACC) as well as pgACC-amygdala connections. I will end with evidence from longitudinal research suggesting that alterations in these primary defensive reactions in infancy are predictive of the development of affective symptoms in adolescence. Together, these series of studies show that distinct frontal regions are implicated in controlling distinct defensive reactions, and that the ability to flexibly shift between different defensive response modes is essential for adequate threat coping. It is this ability that may fail in social emotional disorders such as social anxiety and aggression-related disorders. We are looking forward to see you at the talk! Title: How do we develop an optimised sensorimotor system? Abstract: Human infants are born with exceptionally poor visual and motor skills but by the time they reach adulthood, most vision and action is highly proficient and near-automatic. My lab investigates the processes that support this development. I will present data showing that adults' are highly adept at accounting for the noise in their sensory estimates and the imprecisions of their movements. This allows them to form judgments and choose actions with a high chance of success in highly complex environments. Our recent research shows that this is not a trivial ability to acquire - using a combination of model-driven neuroimaging and behavioural methods, we demonstrate that children as old as 10-11 years do not correctly account for the noise in their system during vision and visually-guided action, which places them at unnecessary risk of failing at visuomotor tasks as result. I will present some examples of tasks that are substantially affected by this development, and present modelling work aimed at understanding which processes drive this shift from inefficient sensorimotor processing in childhood to the highly optimised adult end-state. Kedves Kollégák! Magyari Lillával megfogalmaztunk egy nyílt levelet az MTA ügyében. Kérünk mindenkit, hogy olvassa el és, ha egyet ért vele, írja alá és terjessze levelünket. Mély aggodalommal tölt el bennünket a Magyar Tudományos Akadémiát az elmúlt hetekben ért támadás, alaptalan vádaskodás és anyagi forrásainak elvonása. Nagyon fontosnak tartjuk az egyértelmű, gyors és határozott, közös fellépést a magyar tudomány, a szabad kutatás, és általában a tudás, a tanulás és a tanítás védelme érdekében. Egyértelműen ki szeretnénk mondani: az MTA anyagi ellehetetlenítése, illetve a tudomány ideológiai alapú állami irányítás alá vonását teljes mértékben elfogadhatatlannak tartjuk, és így nem képezheti alku tárgyát. A magyar tudomány és az MTA kritikus helyzete miatt szeretnénk, ha kezdeményezésünkhöz csatlakoznának a magyarországi felsőoktatási intézmények, egyetemek, karjaik, intézeteik, tanszékeik és kutatócsoportjaik, hogy együttes erővel védjük meg a tudomány és a kutatás szakmaiságát, politika- és ideológiamentességét. [Koglist] CogStat workshop

Kedves Kollégák, Az automatikus elemző szoftver, a CogStat (https://www.cogstat.org) használatához workshopot szervezünk. A workshop bemutatja a szoftver használatát, és a szoftver megkülönböztető tulajdonságait, amelyek miatt az elemzés és a statisztika tanulása is sok esetben hatékonyabb az alternatív szoftveres megoldásokhoz képest. A workshopot elsősorban a statisztikát és adatelemzést is tanító kollégáknak, illetve az elemzések iránt érdeklődőknek szánjuk (alapvető statisztikai tudás ismeretét feltételezzük a résztvevőktől). A workshop február 22-én 15 órától, az ELTE Izabella 46. alatti épületében lesz. Az esemény ingyenes, de a korlátozott férőhely miatt jelentkezéshez kötött.
