Austin, Texas (9 March 1998) -- The BBC, the UK's Daily Telegraph
newspaper, and FringeWare will be conducting a Turing Test, i.e. an
evaluation of artificial intelligence technology, as part of BBC TV's
Tomorrow's World program and the Electronic Telegraph forum, with the
online test hosted by FringeWare. The event is included in part of the
Megalab '98 project -- billed as as "Britain's Biggest Experiment" --
and coinciding with the SXSW Interactive Festival held in Austin.
In the past few years, intelligent agents known as "chat bots" have
come into use on the Internet. International competitions are held
regularly to examine how well these robots can convince conversants of
their "humanity", through text-based conversations. Alan Turing, the
father of computing, first proposed such an experiment, hence the name
"Turing Test" honors his invention.
AI software agents participating in this test include "Barry DeFacto"
(written by Robby Glen Garner of Robitron Software Research and
Paco Xander Nathan of FringeWare) and "ALICE" (written by Dr. Richard
S. Wallace of Eastport Internet Associates). The test will also include
human "confederates" posing as robots/conversants.
Participation is open to the public, via the Internet, and viewers
will be asked to cast votes, after their conversations, to judge the
robots and confederates.
Look for coverage of this event in the UK's Daily Telegraph newspaper
and web site, and in the BBC TV's Tomorrow's World broadcasts on 12 Mar

FringeWare will also be participating in the SXSW Interactive Festival
during this course of this Turing Test. A special "inside view" of
intelligent agent technology will be open to the public during

There will be a rare public showing of the "Albert One" software,
written by Robby Glen Garner, which took first place in this year's
Loebner Prize. Also, Paco Xander Nathan and others will be onhand to
discuss intelligent agent technology at the "wine & cheese" open house
reception.
This event previews the "Turing Test 1998" festival, being held in
Austin on 23 June 1998 and celebrating Alan Turing's birthday, as part
of the Forbin Project for cooperative development and evaluation of
intelligent agents via the Internet. Network services and consulting
for both events are being provided by Smallworks, Inc., of Austin,
Texas.
Several members of FringeWare staff will be speaking on related media
topics at the SXSW Interactive conference, and FringeWare will have a
public booth at the trade show. A limited number of guest passes for

2.Dualis kombinatorikus logika
A "klasszikus" kombinatorikus logika rendelkezik ket fontos tulajdonsaggal:
"Church-Rosser" (CR), es (2) konzisztens. (1) intuitive azt jelenti, hogy
a kombinatorikus logikai redukciot elemi szamolasi lepesnek tekinve, teljesen
mindegy, hogy egy terminusban a lepeseket milyen sorrendben tesszuk meg -
ugyanazt az eredmenyt kapjuk. (A kombinatorikus logika szamitogepes
alkalmazasaiban ez egy igen fontos szempont.) (1) kovetkezmenye (S
\not\equiv K-t felteve) (2).
A "dualis" kombinatorokat Dunn vezette be (Dunn & Meyer 1997),
szubstrukturalis logikak Gentzen-fele szekvens rendszerben valo
formalizalasahoz. A dualis kombinatorok egyszeruen a "rendes" kombinatorok
tukorkepei, es mint ilyenek onmagukban semmifele erdekes tulajdonsaggal nem
rendelkeznek. Amennyiben a szokasos es a dualis kombinatorokat egy rendszeren
belul tekintjuk, ugy az ilyen dualis kombinatorikus logika nem ekvivalens a
"szokasos" kombinatorikus logikaval.
Az eloadasban bizonyitom, hogy a kombinatorikusan teljes dualis kombinatorikus
rendszer nem CR es inkonzisztens. Tovabba, bemutatok bizonyos reszeredmenyeket:
kombinatorikusan nem teljes bazisok milyen feltetelek mellett CR-ek vagy nem
CR-ek, konzisztensek/inkonzisztensek.
1. 'Display Logic' explicit kombinatorokat tartalmazo rendszerekre
Meyer 1976 bevezetett egy "altalanositott" Gentzen kalkulust, melyben a
strukturalis szabalyokat explicit kombinatorok helyettesitik. Dunn & Meyer
l997 tovabbfejlesztette ezt a megkozelitest, a kombinatorokat teljes mertekben
formulaknak tekintve; ezekben a rendszerekben a logikai kapcsolok:
\circ ("fusion") es \rightarrow. A metszetszabaly megengedese konzervativ
(ET). ezekben a
rendszerekben. Bimbo & Dunn l998 kibovitette ezeket a rendszereket konjunkcioval
es alternacioval (disztributiv es nem-disztributiv modon) es megmutatta, hogy
ET igaz. Mindezek a rendszerek szingularisak a jobb oldalon (Curry 1963
terminologiajat hasznalva).
Tobb formulat is megengedve a jobb oldalon, felmerul a kerdes, hogy milyen
szabalyokkal vezethetjuk itt be a kombinatorokat. Ket termeszetesnek tuno
megoldas kinalkozik. Az egyikben a kombinatorokat egyforman vezetjuk be a ket
oldalon; ekkor ET hamis fuggetlenul attol, hogy mely kombinatorokrol van szo.
Az eloadas a Display Logic (DL) (vo. Belnap 1982) egy olyan valtozatat
ismerteti, amelyben explicit kombinatorok vannak a jobb oldalon szingularis
rendszerekben. A kombinatorokat, a reflexivitasi axioman tul, "strukturalis
szabalyok" is bevezethetik, mint strukturalis konstansokat. Minden ilyen
konstanst (szabaly alkalmazassal) formulava tehetunk. Az eloadas illusztralja
az ET hamissagat a fent emlitett megkozelitesben es tesz egy megoldasi
javaslatot - a strukturalis konstansok formulava alakitasanak a korlatozasat.

Amire elsosorban kellene referencia, h. ROSZ feed-back (i.e.

PhD Studentship in Cognitive Neuroscience
The Birkbeck Psychology Department was rated 5 in the last Research
Assessment Exercise. It is now offering a departmentally-funded PhD
studentship, available from October 1998, to work in the laboratory of
Professor Mark Johnson on issues concerned with the development of visual
cognitive abilities in infants in relation to the postnatal growth of the
brain. Techniques employed can include the use of high-density
event-related potentials with infants and adults, connectionist/neural
network modelling, eye movement scanning, and behavioural testing of normal
and abnormal populationsl. While candidates should have some developmental
interest, work on ERP correlates of visual cognition in adults is also
possible.
Students with, or expecting, a first class or upper second class degree in
experimental psychology, cognitive science, or neuroscience, should send
their full CV, the names of two referees, and a 2-page statement of their
