CALL FOR PAPERS AND PROPOSALS -- COGSCI 2000
The 22nd Annual Meeting of the Cognitive Science Society
13-15 August 2000
Institute for Research in Cognitive Science
University of Pennsylvania
Philadelphia, PA USA
We are pleased to announce CogSci2000, the twenty-second
annual meeting of the Cognitive Science Society, and its
inaugural meeting for the twenty-first century. The
conference will take place August 13-15, 2000 at the
Inn at Penn located near the Institute for Research in
Cognitive Science, in the heart of the University of
Pennsylvania campus. As is fitting for this turn-of-the-
century meeting, we hope that the complement of
contributions will draw the boundaries of cognitive science
as broadly as possible.
PAPERS
Six page submissions presenting new research findings will
be reviewed and, if accepted, published as 6-page papers in
the Proceedings. Maximum word count depends on how many
figures are included and other details, but without figures
about 5000 words will fit into 6 pages of the proceedings.
Accepted papers will be assigned to 20-minute spoken
presentation or a poster session.
POSTERS
Full and student members of the society are invited to
submit research abstracts. These one-page abstracts will be
reviewed by the program committee, and if accepted, will be
published in the proceedings and presented in poster
sessions.
SYMPOSIA
These will consist of 2-hour sessions each consisting of
three or more presentations of well-integrated talks on a
common topic. There may also be a discussant and there will
be time reserved for audience discussion. A summary of the
symposia will be published in the proceedings. Please submit
all proposals for symposia to Bonnie Webber, Symposia Chair,
at bonnie(a)dai.ed.ac.uk.
TUTORIALS
Proposals are solicited to present tutorials at CogSci2000.
The tutorials will provide conference participants with the
opportunity to gain new insights, knowledge, and skills from
a broad range of areas in the field of cognitive science
from an instructional setting. Tutorial topics can come
from any area of cognitive science. Tutorials can be 1 day
or 1/2 day, and computer labs will be available. Tutorials
will be held on the days immediately preceding the
conference. Please submit all tutorial proposals to Toby
Mintz, Tutorial Chair, at tmintz(a)almaak.usc.edu.
EDUCATION SESSION
During the main conference, there will be a session
dedicated to Cognitive Science education. Please send your
ideas for this session to Mark Steedman, Education Session
Chair, at steedman(a)cogsci.ed.ac.uk.
DEADLINE: All submissions must be received by February 15,
2000.
SUBMISSIONS:
All submissions must be sent electronically for review.
However, we require camera-ready copy of the accepted papers
or abstracts for the proceedings.
For detailed information on acceptable formats, procedures,
addresses, etc., please see:

To whom it may concern,
We at the Institute of Cognitive Science would like to post the following add in you bulletin. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you in advance for your help.

The University of Louisiana at Lafayette is pleased to announce the inauguration of its Institute of Cognitive Science, which offers a Ph.D. in Cognitive Science. The Institute of Cognitive Science emphasizes the comparative study of human, animal and machine cognition. The ICS, one of the university's centers of excellence, links researchers in various university units, including the Cognitive Evolution Group, the Center for Advanced Computer Studies (CACS), and the departments of Psychology, Communicat
Beginning in January of 2000, Ph.D. students will have the option to concentrate in psycholinguistics, thus we welcome applications from students who are interested in the study of language processing. The NSF-funded Psycholinguistics Laboratory at the Institute is equipped for both reaction time and eye movement experiments, and is headed by Dr. Julie Boland. Additional expertise and advising will be available from other faculty with active interests in language processing, including Patricia Kilroe (En
Financial support for graduate students is available through the Institute of Cognitive Science in the form of assistantships and fellowships. This support is awarded on a competitive basis, but the Institute currently has adequate funds to cover most students accepted to the program. For additional information, see the ICS website, which include links to pages with more information for prospective students: http://www.louisiana.edu/Research/ICS/. Or contact: Dr. Todd M. Dear Colleague,
Please bring the following information to the attention of potential
graduate school applicants from your program, especially those
interested in language and cognition.
GRADUATE TRAINING IN HUMAN COGNITION AND DEVELOPMENT AT LEHIGH
UNIVERSITY
The Psychology Department at Lehigh University offers a doctoral program
in Human Cognition and Development that combines focus with
flexibility. Students take core courses in Cognition, Development,
Social Cognition, and Research Design followed by advanced seminars in
more specialized topics.
We draw particular attention to the potential for training in the
psychology of language, and especially cross-linguistic approaches to
the study of language, within our program. Faculty working on
language-related
topics include Barbara Malt, who has been using cross-language
comparisons to
study the representation of word meaning and category boundaries; Jerry
McRoberts, who studies infant perception of native and non-native
speech; Ageliki Nicolopoulou, who studies development of narrative and
its role in the formation of identity and understanding of the world in
a cross-cultural perspective; and Pat O'Seaghdha, whose research
concerns planning processes in language production in English and other
languages.
Students interested in language and cognition also benefit from other
faculty both inside and outside the Psychology Department. Luce
Professor Mark Bickhard studies theories of representation, including
representation of language. Other
Psychology faculty specialize in social cognition, cognitive
development, social and cognitive aging, and other related fields.
Students interested in language within our program can also take
advantage of the presence of associated faculty such as Glenn Blank, a
computational linguist (in the Department of Electrical Engineering and
Computer Science), and Alex Levine (in the Philosophy Department), a
philosopher of mind interested in language and cognition.
Several slots are open for fall 2000 admission. Deadline for
applications: Feb 1, 2000.
Details of the program and application procedures can be found at:
