UNIVERSITY OF OXFORD
OXFORD SUMMER SCHOOL ON CONNECTIONIST MODELLING
Department of Experimental Psychology
University of Oxford
Sunday July 15th to Friday July 27th, 2001
Applications are invited for participation in a 2-week residential
Summer School on techniques in connectionist modelling. The course is
aimed primarily at researchers who wish to exploit neural network
models in their teaching and/or research and it will provide a general
introduction to connectionist modelling, biologically plausible neural
networks and brain function through lectures and exercises on
Macintosh's and PC's. The course is interdisciplinary in content
though many of the illustrative examples are taken from cognitive and
developmental psychology, and cognitive neuroscience. The instructors
with primary responsibility for teaching the course are Kim Plunkett
and Edmund Rolls.
No prior knowledge of computational modelling will be required though
simple word processing skills will be assumed. Participants will be
encouraged to start work on their own modelling projects during the
Summer School.
The cost of participation in the Summer School is stlg950. This figure
covers the cost of accommodation (bed and breakfast at St. John's
College), registration and all literature required for the Summer
School. Participants will be expected to cover their own travel and
meal costs. A number of partial bursaries will be available for
graduate students. Applicants should indicate whether they wish to be
considered for a graduate student scholarship but are advised to seek
further funding as well, since in previous years the number of
graduate student applications has far exceeded the number of
scholarships available.
There is a Summer School World Wide Web page describing the contents
of the 2001 Summer School available on:
http://www-cogsci.psych.ox.ac.uk/summer-school/
If you are interested in participating in the Summer School, please
send a brief description of your background with an explanation of why
you would like to attend the Summer School (one page maximum) no later
than 28th February 2001 to:

SUMMER INSTITUTE IN COGNITIVE NEUROSCIENCE AT DARTMOUTH COLLEGE
The fourteenth annual Summer Institute will be held at Dartmouth
College,
Hanover, New Hampshire, from June 25 through July 7, 2001. The two-
week course
will examine how information about brain structure and function
interact with
issues in cognitive sciences and how approaches in cognitive science
apply to
other forms of neuroscience research. This year issues in COGNITION,
REWARD AND
LEARNING will be studied. A distinguished faculty will lecture on
current
topics in HUMAN COGNITION AS DETERMINED WITH HUMAN BRAIN IMAGING and
REWARD AS
STUDIED FROM THE NEURAL, SYSTEMS AND ECOLOGICAL PERSPECTIVE.
Laboratories and
demonstrations will provide practical experience with methods in
anatomy and
functional imaging and their application to issues in cognitive
neuroscience.
Applications are invited from beginning and established researchers.
The
Foundation provides room, partial board, and limited support for
travel.

The EPR argument in a relational interpretation of quantum mechanics
The EPR incompleteness argument is analyzed in the framework of a
relational interpretation of quantum mechanics, in which the notion of
absolute or observer independent state is rejected. It is argued that
the conclusion of the ordinary EPR argument does not follow, provided
the conditions of the original argument are suitably adapted to the new
interpretation. The consequences of this result for the `peaceful
coexistence' of quantum mechanics and special relativity are briefly
discussed.

Volume 356, Number 9236 30 September 2000
A brief history of British psychology
An introductory exhibition at the Science Museum, London, UK, showing until
2001. Part of preparations for the main British Psychological Society
exhibition to open in 2001.
P sychology in Britain is the first exhibition of psychology to be staged by
the Science Museum. It is a prelude to a larger in-depth exhibition on the
history of British psychology due to open in 2001 and celebrating the centenary
of the British Psychological Society (BPS), the sponsors of the exhibition who
have funded a research fellowship for 3 years at the museum.
British psychology has a distinct origin, different from the behaviourist
traditions of psychology in the USA and the European Gestalt movement. In
Victorian Britain there was considerable interest in phrenology and
anthropometry. Anthropometrists' concern with accurate measurement and
statistical data led to the development of various devices, for example, the
goniometer or anthropometric rule for measuring skull size, and the development
of many of the statistical techniques, such as correlation, still used in
psychology today.
One of the four cases in the exhibition focuses on the early origins of
psychology in Britain, and highlights the work of Sir Francis Galton
(1822-1911) whose research was derived from the anthropometric tradition.
