Dear Colleagues, This week is the last opportunity to submit abstracts for talks and symposia proposals for BCCCD23. The submission window for talks and symposia will close on Sunday, July 31. BCCCD23<https://bcccd.org/> will take place in Budapest, Hungary from January 5-7, 2023. Alongside our invited program, we welcome symposium, paper and poster submissions reporting studies from all fields of cognitive development. Previous BCCCD meetings featured a wide range of topics, such as communication, pragmatics, social cognition, conceptual development, language acquisition, numeracy, object cognition, perceptual learning, inductive learning, memory, executive function, metacognition, cognitive bases of culture, and comparative cognition. New this year, we have a much earlier deadline for submission of talks and symposia in order to accommodate our expanded reviewer pool (while still maintaining our traditional late submission deadline for poster presentations). We are also welcoming proposals for half-day pre-conference events, such as workshops or tutorials, that would be relevant to the BCCCD audience. INVITED SPEAKERS H. This position will be located in the unit Theory & History of Psychology. Despite the dominance of quantitative methods in psychological research, in recent years, qualitative research methods have gained wider recognition. A series of qualitative methods and techniques are available, such as empirical case studies, social-action research, as well as mixed methods. The main qualitative data collection methods are interviews, focus groups, observations, and the analysis of documents and artifacts. We are looking for a colleague with proficiency in qualitative methods; a researcher with psychological training and broad interests, motivated to get involved in teaching, teaching methods and supervision tasks in methodology and theoretical courses at the Department. We want a team player who would be willing to collaborate on a long-term with the Theory & History of Psychology Unit in teaching, management, and research. The Theory & History of Psychology Unit has been promoting qualitative approaches for some time, contributing to, and assessing critically and historically, a great variety of areas such as basic, industrial, developmental, clinical, neuro- and forensic psychology. Furthermore, the international team supports values such as moral integrity and social inclusiveness towards cultural diversity (be this in terms of gender, identity or ethnicity). Qualifications * a completed PhD in psychology or social sciences * training and proficiency in qualitative research methods * publications in peer-reviewed journals presenting research on any psychological topic (preferably including methodological or meta-theoretical reflections), based on qualitative methods (we value quality over quantity) * interest in Philosophy and History of Psychology (let us know about this in your motivation letter) * communicative skills and high-level in English are required, as well as at least one other second language proficiency (any language will be valued), as well as willingness to learn Dutch at B2/C1 level (in case this is not already the other or one of the other language(s)) * experience in teaching (Basic Education Qualification is valued and, in case the candidate does not yet have it, the willingness to obtain a Basic Education Qualification is required) * additionally, some general competences required for any assistant professor working at a Dutch university are: conceptual capacity, environment orientation, presenting and result orientation. Üdv, Attila Alexander Cruise: Continuous (Real-Time) Dynamics Approach to Study Numerical Cognition Friday, July 22 · 15:00 – 16:00 Video call link: https://meet.google.com/gcw-uabu-vzr Alexander Cruise: Continuous (Real-Time) Dynamics Approach to Study Numerical Cognition In this paper, we applied computer mouse-tracking for the first time to investigate (across 3 Experiments) how interaction between (symbolic) Arabic numerals and (non-symbolic) physical size, the so-called size congruity effect, reflected in the streaming x,y-coordinates kinematics of a computer mouse trajectories. I will discuss why methodological advantages of capturing real-time cognitive dynamics in a continuous fashion (over just analyzing discrete summary statistics measures, such as RT's and accuracies) provides better ability to elucidate at which processing stage (in transition from perception-to-action) the SCE emerges, and how it is resolved over time by the brain. I propose that syntactic bootstrapping relates to a larger cognitive model: predictive processing. According to this model, we perceive and make sense of the world by constantly predicting what will happen next in a probabilistic fashion. I will outline evidence that prediction operates within language acquisition and show how this framework helps us understand the way lexical knowledge refines syntactic predictions, and how syntactic knowledge refines predictions about novel words’ meanings. I end by discussing some challenges of applying the predictive processing framework to syntactic bootstrapping and propose new avenues to investigate in future work. Of note, impression management includes both how others see us and how we see ourselves. Inspired by Barry Schlenker (a pioneer and my PhD professor for IM), I've found myself viewing the world through an IM lens for the past 15 years. In this talk, I will summarize the ways in which I have applied IM and where I think it can be best applied in the future. This will begin with how we think about ourselves, with work related to stereotype threat and leadership, move to how others see us, with work related to the schemas and desires that we have regarding leaders, then end with the most complex IM situation - the multiple audience problem.
