I am looking for a post-doctoral researcher, to join in a basic
research project investigating cognitive modeling, cognitive
architectures, and human skill learning.
The starting date is September 1, 2005 (although a slight delay,
say by a couple of months, is also possible). This will be a full-time
research position, with the expectation that you devote all your
time to project-related research work (not your own research
topics).
Prospective applicants should have a finished Ph.D degree before
starting, by September 1, 2005 (or shortly thereafter). They should
have a strong background in computer science (the equivalent of a
BS in computer science), with strong Java programming skills,
and have prior exposure to psychology and
cognitive science (with background in human and machine learning,
motivation, and meta-cognition preferred), and other related areas.
Prospective applicants with interests in cognitive science should
apply by EMAILing me: (1) a complete vitae, and (2) samples of best
prior writings (especially published papers), and also FAX me
(3) GRE/TOEFL scores (if available), and other pertinent information.
Make sure to also
FAX me (4) copies of all transcripts of all the BS, MS, Ph.D programs
you previously attended. Also FAX me (5) the reference letters (if
available).
RPI is a top-tier research university. The new CogSci department
has identified research as its primary missions. The department is
conducting research in a number of areas: cognitive architectures,
cognitive modeling, human and machine learning, multi-agent
interactions and social simulation, neural networks and connectionist
models, human and machine reasoning, cognitive engineering,
perception and motor control, and so on.
See the Web page below regarding my own research (in the afore-described
area and in other areas):
http://www.cogsci.rpi.edu/~rsun
Two sample publications are downloadable from my Web site:

FILOZÓFIAI KOMPETENCIÁK WORKSHOP
2005 június 23 (csütörtök)
Budapest
A Bolognai Folyamat által előtérbe helyezett kompetencia alapú képzés a
filozófia területén is felveti a problémát: vajon milyen készségeket és
képességeket fejleszt a filozófia, illetve milyen módszerekkel és
technikákkal lehet e képzési folyamatot elősegíteni.
A kérdéskör elsősorban a nem-szakos képzést folytató kollégákat érinti,
hiszen az ő területükön sokkal inkább veszélybe került a filozófiai
képzés legitimációja. Ugyanakkor azonban a filozófia szakos képzésben sem
megkerülhető a téma, hiszen ott is kérdés: milyen kompetenciák birtokában
mit tehetnek hallgatóikért a kompetenciafejlesztés területén.
* Melyek ezek a kompetenciák? (Pl. fogalmi analízis, előfeltevések
feltárása és elemzése, látásmódok elemzése, alapfogalmak rendszerének
tisztázása, idealizáció, kritikai gondolkodás, vita- és dialóguskészség)
* Hogyan fejleszthetők? (szövegolvasás, dialógus, értelmezések
összevetése, vita)
* Milyen szövegek feldolgozása segíti különösképpen a fejlesztésüket?
Tanszékeink egy workshop keretében szeretnének párbeszédet kezdeményezni
e témáról.

"The Necessity of the Normative: The Resilience of the Manifest
Image in Sellars's Scientific Realism"
5.00 PM, Monday, 13. June, 14. Zrinyi str. / room 412
Abstract:
Although Sellars wrote of a "synoptic vision" in which the manifest image and the scientific image are reconciled, many have taken his scientific realism to entail the eventual dominance of the scientific image. I argue that this is incorrect, indeed, that the practical reality of human life is essentially tied to the ineliminable normativity of the manifest image.

We have several Postdoctoral Research Fellowships available at the CBCD
(Birkbeck, University of London) to start this year. Please pass on
or post
the advert below to any relevant PhD students or current postdocs.
One of
the projects will involve ERP testing of infants at risk for autism, and
would suit someone with experience of working with developmental
disorders. A second project will explore the neural basis of early

of ERP recordign with infants, or testing early category learning. A
third project involves studies of novelty preference and its neural
bases.
Feel free to contact any of us for further information.

The combination of mobile and ubiquitous computing is emerging as a promising new paradigm with the goal to provide computing and communication services all the time, everywhere, transparently and invisibly to the user, using devices embedded in the surrounding physical environment. In this context, the communication devices, the objects with which they interact, or both may be mobile. The implementation of such a paradigm requires advances in wireless network technologies and devices, development of infrastructures supporting cognitive environments, and discovery and identification of ubiquitous computing applications and services.
The second Annual International Conference on Mobile and Ubiquitous Systems: networking and services (Mobiquitous-05) will cover all these aspects, representing a forum where practitioners and researchers coming from the many areas involved in ubiquitous solutions design and deployment will be able to interact exchanging the cross-layer experiences needed to build the overall ubiquitous systems. Areas addressed by the conference include: applications, service-oriented computing, middleware, networking, agents, knowledge management and databases.
DEMOS: Proposals for research and industrial demos are solicited. A maximum of 2 pages should be submitted which include a description of the demo and needed resources from the conference organizers. Proposals should be submitted to Dr. Ramiro Liscano (Demo Chair) rliscano(a)ieee.org by June 10, 2005.
