(H-1111) *Abstract: * Why does the phenomenal appearance of ambiguous patterns reverse spontaneously? What neural events precede and prompt these reversals? Of the two factors have been widely suspected -- attention and adaptation -- we can rule out the former and fail to find evidence implicating the latter. Surprisingly, we do find such evidence for a short-term memory of visual appearance. Perceptual states and memory states reverse independently and at widely different time-scales. Taken together, our results suggest that multi-stable perception (and perhaps phenomenal appearance generally) involves a close interaction of perceptual and memory levels. CFP: Határmunkálatok a tudományban és a publikus tudományfelfogás, valamint a „Tudománytörténet és tudományfilozófia a tudományos oktatásban” EU 7. kp. Magyarországi első nemzeti találkozója" A melléklet szövege: A BME Filozófia és Tudománytörténet Tanszéke, az ELTE Tudománytörténet és Tudományfilozófia Tanszéke és az ELTE Társadalomtudományi Szakkollégiuma 2 napos műhelykonferenciát szervez Határmunkálatok a tudományban és a publikus tudományfelfogás címmel. A konferencia időpontja: 2008. május 29‐30. Helyszíne: ELTE TTK Lágymányosi Campus, H‐1117 Pázmány Péter sétány 1/a. A konferencia célja, hogy közös fórumot teremtsen azon hazai kutatók számára, akik kiemelkedő figyelmet szentelnek a címben foglalt témáknak, és kutatási eredményekkel rendelkeznek az érintett területeken. A „határmunkálatok” fogalmát Thomas F. Gieryn tudományszociológus vezette be annak a tevékenységnek a jellemzésére, amellyel a tudósok vagy más érdekcsoportok olyan színben jellemzik a tudományt, amely saját tevékenységüket kedvezően, a rivális érdekcsoport tevékenységét pedig kedvezőtlenül állítja be a közönség szemében. Mivel a közönség a szélesebb társadalom, beleértve a releváns döntéshozó csoportokat, a tét a tudomány publikus képének transzformációja, és így elengedhetetlen, hogy a téma tárgyalása érintse a tudomány és a laikus társadalom közti viszony és a laikusok tudományképének problémáját. Ezekkel a kérdésekkel célzottan foglalkozik a Replika című folyóirat 2006. októberi számában található tematikus blokk, ám mindezidáig nem történt kísérlet a releváns hazai kutatások egybegyűjtésére, egy ezek közti párbeszéd megindítására. Ezt a hiányt kívánjuk pótolni egy olyan társadalmi helyzetben, amikor a tudományosság jellegének és hatókörének problémája lépten‐nyomon felbukkan – implicit vagy explicit módon – a tudományos ismeretterjesztésben, a média különböző fórumain, az oktatásban és a mindennapi műveltségben. A konferenciára május 4‐ig lehet jelentkezni a tudomany.es.bizalom(a)gmail.com címen. A jelentkezés tartalmazza a név és affiliáció mellett az előadás címét és egy egyoldalas kivonatát (300‐500 szó). A jelentkezéseket a szervezők mérlegelik és május 13‐ig döntenek az elfogadásról. A legfontosabb előadások írott verziójának megjelentetésére nyomtatott fórumot kívánunk biztosítani. A szervezők Hordósy Rita (ELTE TÁTK) Kutrovátz Gábor (ELTE TTK) Láng Benedek (BME GTK) Zemplén Gábor (BME GTK) A konferenciát az OTKA és az NKFP támogatja A műhelykonferenciához kapcsolódóan az EU 7. keretprogramjának „Tudománytörténet és tudományfilozófia a tudományos oktatásban” címmel elnyert pályázatának (History and Philosophy in Science Teaching, HIPST) első nemzeti találkozója lesz 2008. május 31‐én. A találkozó célja azon érdekcsoportok és személyek kommunikációjának könnyítése és koordinálása, akik céljuknak tekintik a diákok tudományról alkotott nézeteinek adekvátabbá tételét, a kritikai és reflexív gondolkodás képességének fejlesztését, valamint a filozófiai és történelmi ismeretanyag – a jelenleginél meghatározóbb szerepű – beépítését a természettudományok oktatásába. Várunk minden olyan szervezetet, tanárt, kurátort vagy más személyt, aki a két éves tervezett tananyagfejlesztés és tesztelés iránt érdeklődik. Az első nemzeti találkozó célja ismerkedés egymással és a HIPST projekttel (valamint más, hasonló projektekkel) és a hazai helyzet feltárása. A nemzeti találkozóra jelentkezni a tudomany.es.bizalom(a)gmail.com címen lehet május 12‐ig. Nagy segítséget nyújt, ha a résztvevő felek el tudják küldeni motivációikat, az általuk látott lehetőségeket (akár a már működő projektek adatait, akár az intézményi lehetőségeket) és korlátokat. A találkozón a kölcsönös (kb. 10 perces) bemutatkozás után megpróbáljuk megtalálni azokat a közös pontokat, ahol a következő években együtt tudunk dolgozni a tudományos oktatás új alternatíváinak kidolgozásában. invitation to a philosophy talk - reminder

The CEU Department of Philosophy cordially invites you to a talk by Brad Inwood (University of Toronto) on Tria Genera Bonorum Tuesday, 25 March, 4.30 PM, Zrinyi 14, Room 412 Abstract: Go on, then, if you want, make your classifications and lay out your fancy distinctions of goods into three or four or many kinds! These categorizations have no bearing on the issue and this isnt the way to bring us over to Plato. This complaint from the Platonist Atticus reflects a long history of debate about the good. Is there just one kind of good (one thinks of Platos Form of the good) or are the complex classifications we find in later ancient texts closer to the truth? In this paper I try to reconstruct the history of the doctrine that there are goods of the body, goods of the soul, and external goods, along the way pointing to the moral of the story: that technical classifications can sharpen ethical discussion (such as the debate about the nature of the happy life) but can just as easily undermine it if taken too far. Platonists, Peripatetics and Stoics were all involved, but the positions taken do not align with school affiliations; the philosophical inclinations of individuals seem to play a greater role.
