The CEU Department of Philosophy cordially invites you to a talk (as part of its Departmental Colloquium series) by Michel ter Hark (University of Groningen) on 'Wittgenstein on the Necker cube: shifting aspects between the Tractatus and the Philosophical Investigations.' Tuesday, 22 March, 2010, 4.30 PM, Zrinyi 14, Room 412 ABSTRACT This talk is about the relation between a very specific remark in the Tractatus, 5.5432 about seeing an ambiguous 3D cube, and Wittgenstein's later writings on aspect seeing. In my talk I argue in the first place that a sound reading of 5.5432 does not commit Wittgenstein to a form of (sense datum) realism, as e.g. Hintikka supposes. Instead I argue that at 5.5432 Wittgenstein applies his theory of the proposition to dissolve problems in the theory of perceptual judgements in a way analogous to his critique of Russell's theory of judgement. In the second part of my lecture I try to explain why Wittgenstein was so much interested in this and related phenomena. The answer to this question will reveal a 'therapeutic' or 'antimetaphysical' interest. There is something about such phenomena that in particular triggers the philosophical mind to hypostatise 'objects' which serve to explain them. Finally, I argue that in the Tractatus Wittgenstein himself succumbed to this explanatorily illusion and that this is part of the motive of his later writings on the subject.

The next talk in the CDC Seminar Series will be given by Mihály Racsmány, BME and University of Szeged Date: THURSDAY, March 17, 2011, 5 PM Location: Cognitive Development Center, Hattyú u. 14, 3rd floor Episodic inhibition: the goal-related nature of memory suppression Abstract: Memories are shaped and edited by various encoding and retrieval processes. An influential concept of these processes suggests that inhibitory control mechanisms may be recruited to prevent unwanted memories from coming to mind (Anderson, 2003), and this executive control will suppress the representation of unwanted memories. A slightly different version of this concept is that the contents of memories are inhibited rather than memories themselves. We have called this latter idea “episodic inhibition”, which emphasizes that there is a pattern of activation/inhibition over the contents of every episodic memory, and this strongly influences access to specific features of the content, e.g. representations of words in a memory of a recently acquired word list (Racsmány and Conway, 2006). The present talk will report a series of recent experiments underlying this concept. The next talk in the CDC seminar series will be given by: Sabina Pauen, University of Heidelberg Date: March 9, 2011, 5 PM Location: Cognitive Development Center at CEU, Hattyú u. 14, 3rd floor *Learning categories from observing others - A case of natural pedagogy?* Abstract: Can infants understand that another person expresses interest for a specific category of objects (rather than for an individual exemplar)? My talk will provide evidence suggesting that this is the case. All experiments to be presented follow the same general paradigm: An actor is sitting behind two small boxes located left and right in front of her. On each box, a 3-D object is placed. On the one side, this object represents an animal and on the other side, it represents a vehicle. (These two global categories were chosen because we already know that even 4 months olds can discriminate them) The actor turns towards one of the two objects and looks at it with an interested facial expression. Infants see a total of 11 different scenes that follow this script. In each scene, a new pair of exemplars is presented, with the side of the animal / vehicle counterbalanced across trials. On the first 10 trials, the actor always turns towards the same kind of object, but at test, she turns toward the exemplar of the contrasting category. To check whether infants realized that the person changed the category of interest during the last trial, we compared the mean looking time on the 10th and the 11th trial. A significant increase in looking time was interpreted as indicating that infants realized the change in category of interest. Using this paradigm, we tested infants ranging from 7 to 12 months, analyzing not only their looking time at test but also their looking patterns (i.e. gaze following, checking). Furthermore, we systematically manipulated social cues indicating the actors’ interest (i.e. contrasting scenes involving gaze information only with scenes including reaching behavior as well). We also ran a study replacing the actor by a desk-lamp turning towards the target and flashing it. With respect to the theory of natural pedagogy, two further studies seem of special interest: In one experiment, the actor did not establish eye-contact with the child before turning towards the target. In the other study, two actors were presented simultaneously, each focusing on one specific category, but exchanging their focus of interest at test. In my talk, I will describe the above-mentioned studies in more detail. Metacognitive commentaries can be used to communicate knowledge of one´s own decision process during simple perceptual judgments. In this talk Steve Fleming will discuss how the building blocks of signal detection theory (SDT) can be applied to the modeling and analysis of metacognitive reports. Data from experiments harnessing individual differences will then be presented to demonstrate that confidence, task performance and metacognitive ability (defined as the ability to discriminate correct from incorrect decisions) can be dissociated across tasks and individuals. He will show that this partially independent component of metacognitive ability correlates with the grey and white matter profile of anterior prefrontal cortex and finish by considering how behavioural and neural data can inform and constrain links between metacognitive behaviour and theoretical constructs of consciousness. Subsequently, Zoltan Nagy will describe aspects of advanced MRI methodology upon which this study was based. Topics include a) correction for eddy current and susceptibility induced artifacts, b) calibration of MRI hardware for diffusion tensor imaging, c) how to decide whether the acquisition should be pulse triggered and d) normalizing the individual brains for group-level statistical methods. Az előadás arra vállalkozik, hogy a nyelvészeti hagyomány általános nyelvtanfelfogásának paradox jelenségeit a pszichológia és a kognitív idegtudomány eredményeivel szembesítve felvázolja egy olyan grammatika alapjait, amely az egyének nyelvének változását és változatosságát immár a nyelvtan inherens tulajdonságaként képes kezelni. Miután a csecsemő az anyanyelvét kezdetben egyszerű akusztikus ingerek sorozataként érzékeli, szinte magától értetődik, hogy a fonetikai-fonológiai jelenségek - a klasszikus elképzelésekkel szemben - olyannyira szerves részét képezik a nyelvtannak, hogy az egyéni nyelvek grammatikájának karakterét egyenesen alapvető módon határozzák meg: az előadás a hangok és fonémák szokásos értelmezésének problémáit elemezve végül arra mutat rá, hogy a beszédpercepció, ezzel együtt pedig a nyelvtan is prototípuselvű. *Helyszín:* a Debreceni Egyetem Kossuth Lajos III. sz.
