The CEU Department of Philosophy cordially invites you to a talk (as part of its Departmental Colloquium series) by Ralph Walker (University of Oxford) on `Kant and Virtue Ethics` Tuesday, 7 February, 2012, 5.30 PM, Zrinyi 14, Room 412 ABSTRACT Although some people have recognized that Kant’s moral philosophy has more in common with virtue ethics than is usually thought, it has not been appreciated how close the two are and how much Kant owes to Aristotle. Aristotle’s “practical wisdom” (phronésis) relates closely to Kant’s “respect (Achtung) for the moral law”, and something like Kantian freedom is needed to complete Aristotle’s account of “continence” (enkrateia). Kant’s theory remains in no sense consequentialist, despite some current suggestions, but it remains highly defensible. Please see below for details. --- Upon funding approval the University of Hamburg will have a position open for a research associate (wissenschaftliche/r Mitarbeiter/in) salary group 13 TV-L -- with a starting date of April 1, 2012 or later for the following project: SFB 936: Multisite communication in the brain: Changes in large-scale interactions as a mechanism of adaptive plasticity". The PhD student will become a member of the Graduate training program of the SFB. The position calls for 25 hours per week. The short-term contract will last for 2 years - (see also § 2 of the Academic Fixed-Term Contract Law (Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz)). The university intends to increase the number of women amongst its academic personnel and expressly encourages qualified women to apply. In compliance with the Hamburg Equal Opportunity Law, preference will be given to qualified female applicants. Responsibilities: A research associate is expected to prepare and run experiments, partially with EEG record-ings. She/or he will have to analyze the data and to publish or support publishing the results. The successful candidate will supervise research students and will take over some coordination tasks in the lab. It is expected that the successful candidate work on a dissertation using partially data acquired in project related studies. The CEU Department of Cognitive Science cordially invites you to a talk (as part of its Departmental Colloquium series) by Szabolcs Keri, University of Szeged, Hungary; National Psychiatry Center, Budapest, Hungary and Einat Levy, Rutgers University, Newark, USA on Trauma has no Race and Nation: a Perspective of Clinical Neuroscience Date: Wed, February 1, 2012 - 17:00 - 18:30 Location: Department of Cognitive Science, CEU, Frankel Leó út 30-34., Room G15 ABSTRACT: Psychological trauma, an overwhelming experience of various threatening situations during which the survival, safety, and integrity of the self are severely endangered, can occur in various cultural environments. Posttraumatic stress reactions include intensive and prolonged fear and anxiety, detachment from reality, intrusive recollection (nightmares, flashbacks, and aversive memories), avoidance behavior, emotional numbness, depression, and social isolation. These reactions are expressed, interpreted, and treated in a unique way in different cultures. Here, we argue that behind the cultural diversity psychological trauma is associated with uniformly altered basic associative learning processes. By the comparison of trauma-exposed individuals from the Middle East (victims of terrorist attacks and military trauma) and Hungary (the natural disaster of redsludge flood and other civilian traumas), we show that context reversal learning is identically disrupted, together with structural alterations in the hippocampal formation and amygdala. Results from these studies suggest that human suffering related to traumatic experiences shares the same neurocognitive and neuroanatomical bases regardless of culture, race, and ethnicity.
