Barton<https://www.dur.ac.uk/anthropology/staff/academic/?id=122> (Evolutionary Anthropology Research Group, Durham University) Date: Wednesday, May 16, 2018 - 17:00-18:30 Location: Department of Cognitive Science, CEU, Oktober 6 St. 7, room 101 Brains growing on the tree of life: a phylogenetic approach to brain structure and function Recent developments in comparative methods are providing unprecedented insights into how traits evolved through time. I apply these methods to the mammalian brain, with a particular focus on primates. The results overturn some simplistic ideas about brain evolution that have taken root in the literature, providing a more complex and nuanced picture in which different kinds of structural change occurred at different times in response to different selection pressures. The complexity of the patterns of brain evolution give the lie to single-factor hypotheses and in particular undermine attempts to explain cognitive evolution as the product of selection on 'general intelligence' and executive control. Instead, the results suggest that the brains of different species support specialized forms of embodied cognition closely associated with their sensory-motor adaptations. Dear all, The CEU Department of Cognitive Science cordially invites you to its next week talk by: Zoltan Nadasdy (UT Austin) Date: Wednesday, May 9, 2018 - 17:00-18:30 Host: Jozsef Fiser Location: Department of Cognitive Science, CEU, Oktober 6 street 7, room 101. Title: TBA We are committed to study the normal mechanisms and diseases of information processing in the human brain. Our research philosophy is based on the assumption that a fundamental principle of neural communication is the synergy between brain rhythms and action potentials. Oscillations in the brain generate propagating waves that enforce neurons to "listen" their inputs at specific times and ignore them another times. Therefore, major brain rhythms are instrumental in orchestrating complex functions by synchronization and desynchronization of information flow at the level of individual neurons. Any structural damage will likely cause a disruption of the delicate scheduling logic, which leads to hyper-synchrony, a key electrographic signature a number of neurological disorders share, including epilepsy and Parkinson's disease. Studying these diseases will help us understanding not only the mechanisms of this disorders, but also elucidates how the normal brain works. Title: Overcoming the replication crisis in psychological science Abstract Several fraud cases, widespread failure to replicate or reproduce seminal findings, the exposition of common biases in the analysis of data, and pervasive error in the scientific literature have led to a replication crisis in psychological science. In this talk, Jelte Wicherts will discuss some of the core findings that point at weak spots in contemporary science and considers the structural and human factors that underlie them. He will delve into the human tendencies that create errors and biases in data collection, analyses, and reporting of research results. He will present several solutions to overcome observer bias, publication bias, researcher's tendency to exploit degrees of freedom in their analysis of data, low statistical power, and errors in the reporting of results.
