Dear Cognitive Folks, The next Fluencia Party will be on 9th February (Friday) starting at 8.00pm in Élesztő (Tűzoltó utca close to Corvin metro station). Kedves Kollégák! Engedjék meg, hogy figyelmükbe ajánljam Margócsy Dániel (Cambridge): Olvassuk Vesaliust hétszázszor! Szex és anatómia a kora újkorban című mai előadását. Absztrakt: Vesalius Fabricája rakta le a modern anatómia alapjait, és hosszú évszázadokra meghatározta a modern orvostudomány fejlődését. Ennek ellenére keveset tudunk arról, hogy hogyan olvasták a Fabricát a korban. Előadásomban beszámolok a Vesalius cenzus eredményeiről, és összefoglalom, hogy mit lehet megtudni a Fabrica recepciójáról, ha megvizsgáljuk az első két fóliáns kiadás (1543 és 1555) több mint hétszáz fennmaradt példányát. A Fabrica drága könyv volt. Ez a tény meghatározta, hogy kik tudtak hozzáférni a könyvhöz a XVI. században: elsősorban gazdag (és férfi) orvosok, akik azért nyúltak a könyvhöz, hogy megtudják, hogyan működnek a nemi szervek. Barton<https://www.dur.ac.uk/anthropology/staff/academic/?id=122> (Evolutionary Anthropology Research Group, Durham University) Date: Wednesday, May 16, 2018 - 17:00-18:30 Location: Department of Cognitive Science, CEU, Oktober 6 St. 7, room 101 Brains growing on the tree of life: a phylogenetic approach to brain structure and function Recent developments in comparative methods are providing unprecedented insights into how traits evolved through time. I apply these methods to the mammalian brain, with a particular focus on primates. The results overturn some simplistic ideas about brain evolution that have taken root in the literature, providing a more complex and nuanced picture in which different kinds of structural change occurred at different times in response to different selection pressures. The complexity of the patterns of brain evolution give the lie to single-factor hypotheses and in particular undermine attempts to explain cognitive evolution as the product of selection on 'general intelligence' and executive control. Instead, the results suggest that the brains of different species support specialized forms of embodied cognition closely associated with their sensory-motor adaptations.
