Date: Wed, March 14, 2012 - 17:00 - 18:30 Location: Department of Cognitive Science, CEU, Frankel Leó út 30-34., Room G15 Can the comprehension of abstract language be rooted in sensory experiences? ABSTRACT: The question of learning the meaning of abstract language (roughly, expressions with no perceptible referents) has been bugging philosophers for thousands of years. More recently, a number of experimental paradigms have emerged trying to shed light on this issue. The basic idea explored in the talk is that people understand abstract (metaphorical) expressions by linking them to sensory or bodily experiences. If this is the case, we should be able to show that these experiences affect people’s interpretation of abstract utterances. Feladatkör: • Viselkedéses, elektrofiziológiai és képalkotó (fMRI) adatok feldolgozása, elemzése • Részvétel kognitív idegtudományi vizsgálatok és publikációk előkészítésében • Részvétel a kutatócsoport napi munkájában Pályázati feltételek: • Felsőfokú végzettség (min. MA/MSc szint) • PhD fokozat, vagy PhD képzésben való részvétel • Magas szintű számítógép-ismeret • Jó problémamegoldó képesség és együttműködési készség • Angol középfokú C típusú nyelvvizsga Előnyt jelent: • Tapasztalat kognitív idegtudományi kísérletek tervezésében és lebonyolításában • Tapasztalat jelfeldolgozásban, elektrofiziológiai és fMRI adatok feldolgozásában, elemzésében • MatLab, R, SPSS, Statistica programok magas szintű ismerete • Szakirányú MA/Msc diploma: pszichológia, bio-informatika, orvosi, műszaki Jogállására, illetményére és egyéb juttatásaira az 1992. évi XXXIII. törvényben előírt rendelkezések alkalmazandók. A kinevezés határozatlan időre szól, 3 hónapos próbaidő kikötésével. A munkakör az elbírálást követően 2013. augusztus 1-től betölthető. The next talk in the CDC Seminar series will be given by: Lucas P. Butler Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology Title: Young Children's Use of Intentional Communication to Guide Inductive Inference Abstract: In learning about the world, children employ a critical developmental tool: carving up the world into categories that allow for efficient learning and inference. But this process presents an inductive challenge for young children, as they must continually assess whether novel information is idiosyncratic, episodic, or superficial, or whether it represents important, generalizable information about a category. In this talk I discuss a series experiments investigating one way in which children might tackle this inductive challenge: attending to whether novel information is being intentionally communicated for their benefit. Building on theoretical and empirical work showing an early sensitivity to intentional communication in infancy (Csibra, 2010; Csibra & Gergely, 2009), I will present a series of experiments testing when and how this sensitivity plays a role in older children's active inductive inference processes as they construct a conceptual understanding of the world. I will propose that during the preschool years children build on this foundation of early sensitivity to intentional communication, developing a nuanced, social-pragmatic learning mechanism that helps them judiciously evaluate the generalizability and importance of novel information. We cordially invite you to the next lecture of the BME Cognitive Seminar Series: Date & Time: May 27, Monday, 12:00-13:00 Location: BME, XI., Egry József utca 1., T. ép 515. *Sensory prediction and the sense of agency during individual and joint action* *John Dewey* Central European University, Budapest, Hungary Abstract During voluntary action, forward models in the brain pre-activate representations of the predicted sensory consequences. These forward models are believed to play important roles in motor control and the sense of agency (SoA), i.e. registration that one was the initiator or controller of the action. The majority of the literature on sensory prediction and its relation to SoA has focused on individual actions. By contrast, there has been relatively little work on sensory prediction and SoA when the sensory consequences of actions are multiply determined by several simultaneous influences. In this talk, I will present an overview of current theories linking SoA to sensory prediction in the context of individual action. Then I will present some evidence from my recent work suggesting that in the context of cooperative joint action (e.g. controlling a moving object together with another person), the tight relationship between sensory prediction and SoA begins to break down.
