The CEU Department of Philosophy cordially invites you to a talk (as part of its Departmental Colloquium series) by Sydney Shoemaker (Cornell University) on "Persistence and Properties" Tuesday, 12 November, 2013, 5.30 PM Zrinyi 14, Room 412 ABSTRACT The paper defends three-dimensionalism about ordinary objects, and rejects both the four-dimensionalist view that such objects are “space-time worms” and the “stage theory” that they are momentary thing-stages. It allows that there are entities of which four-dimensionalism is true, entities having temporal parts, and that there is a sense in which the existence of ordinary objects is grounded in the existence of such entities. But ordinary objects cannot themselves be such entities. This is because of the kinds of properties they have. On the one hand these are “temporally local,” in the sense that their instantiation at a time does not constitutively depend on what is true at other times. But they are individuated by causal profiles that point towards the future careers of the things that have them, requiring that such successor states as their instantiations have be related to them in certain ways, these being ways that constitute the persistence of the objects over time. Space-time worms and momentary stages cannot have properties of this sort.

Dear all, This is to remind you that CEU Cognitive Development Center cordially invites you to a talk (as part of its seminar series) by *Prof. Andrew Bremner,* *(Goldsmith, University of London)* Date: Wednesday, November 6th, 2013 - 17:00 - 18:30 Location: Cognitive Development Center, Seminar Room, Budapest, Hattyu street 14, 3rd floor *The multisensory milieu in early life: * *How infants and children construct multisensory representations of their bodies and the world* Our various sense organs develop according to widely varying timetables across pre- and post-natal life. Each sense organ provides information in largely different neural codes (vision codes space in retinotopic coordinates, touch in somatotopic coordinates and so on), and according to different schedules of environmental and sensory transduction. To further complicate matters, the spatial relationships between the senses vary substantially with movements of the body, like when the eyes move in their sockets or when the body changes shape as it grows during development. I will describe our current research which addresses how infants and children manage to combine these multiple signals into unified functional representations of the world and themselves, focussing especially on the development of an ability to appropriately combine visual, tactile, and proprioceptive cues to hand position. Whilst the current dominant theories concerning multisensory development agree that infants are able to encode “amodal” spatial aspects of the multisensory environment relatively independently of sensory experience, I will argue that the evidence in support of this view has important limitations, and that our abilities to perceive multisensory spatial and temporal aspects of one’s body and the world have extended developmental trajectories which depend on sensorimotor experience. The CEU Department of Philosophy cordially invites you to a talk (as part of its Departmental Colloquium series) by Nicholas Davey (University of Dundee) on `Towards A Community of the Plural: Philosophical Pluralism, Hermeneutics and Practice.` Tuesday, 5 November, 2013, 5.30 PM, Zrinyi 14, Room 412 ABSTRACT It would be difficult to deny the pressing relevance of the questions, “What is pluralism?” and, “How is pluralism to be thought?” Tellingly, the notable political analyst Simon Jenkins of The Guardian wrote recently of the Syrian situation, that the “differences between Sunni and Shia are intractable” for (and this for our purposes was the key remark) “the acceptance of pluralism relativises truth.”[1] ( https://amsprd0410.outlook.com/owa/?ae=PreFormAction&a=ReplyAll&t=IPM.Note&… ) The comment betrays a common line of reasoning: to acknowledge a pluralism of values, norms and/or epistemic norms leads inexorably to relativism and nihilism. Although it is flattering for philosophy that one of its concepts should gain such notoriety, that alone should perhaps prompt caution.
