Ryle and Intentionality

ABSTRACT
After some opening comments on how I think one should approach the philosophy of mind, I look at what relatively little Gilbert Ryle had to say explicitly about intentionality, that occurring almost exclusively in his several papers on phenomenology. Then I discuss the notion of intentionality with respect to the doctrines of The Concept of Mind, although neither the word nor the idea, strictly speaking, appears anywhere in the book. Following more exposition of my own views, including an argument I have made for a certain, specific theory of intentionality, I close with some final reflections on Ryle as a modern-day Aristotelian.

TITLE: Does Sexual Selection Explain Human Sex Differences in Aggression?

ABSTRACT: Evidence on human sex differences in aggression is assessed in
relation to sexual selection and social role explanations. A distinction is
first made between within-sex and between-sex aggression. Within-sex aggression
showed a pattern of larger sex differences in physical than verbal aggression
and little overall difference in indirect aggression, consistent with an
evolutionary cost-benefit analysis. Sex differences in physical aggression are
found early in life, and peak in young adulthood, again consistent with an
evolutionary origin. Possible mediators of the sex difference in physical
aggression are fear of physical danger, impulsiveness, and empathy, which
broadly fit both explanations. Individual differences are discussed in relation
to alternative life history strategies, and ecologically-produced and
role-related variability. Aggression is placed into the context of other sex
differences that are also likely to have resulted from sexual selection.
Research on between-sex (partner) aggression in western samples showed that
women and men are equally likely to physically aggress. A cross-national
analysis found that there was a strong correlation between the magnitude of the
sex difference and a national measure of gender empowerment. Both sets of
findings are discussed in relation to models derived from sexual selection, and
social role analyses. Sexual selection in its original form provides a plausible
ultimate explanation for sex differences in within-sex aggression. Between-sex
aggression can be viewed in evolutionary terms as the outcome of conflicts of
interest and inequality of coercive power between the sexes, although this is
heavily overlaid with influences from gender roles, particularly patriarchal
values, which can explain the marked cross-national variations.

*Absztrakt: *
Az explicit és implicit tanulási folyamatok elkülönülnek egymástól. A
készségek tanulása nem csak a gyakorlás közben, "online" zajlik, hanem a
gyakorlások közötti, "offline" periódusokban is. Számos vizsgálat
mutatott ki fiatal, egészséges személyeknél offline teljesítményjavulást
(például Robertson, Pascual-Leone & Press, 2004; Dorfberger, Adi-Japha &
Karni, 2007), arról azonban megoszlanak a vélemények, hogy az alvásnak
milyen szerepe van ebben (például Walker és Stickgold, 2004; Spencer,
Gouw & Ivry, 2008). Továbbá az is fontos kérdés, hogy például egészséges
idős személyeknél, vagy olyan patológiák esetén mint az MCI (Mild
Cognitive Impairment) vagy az autizmus, van-e offline
teljesítményjavulás, konszolidáció, vagy felejtés.
Kutatásainkban a szeriális reakcióidő-feladat egy módosított
változatával vizsgáltuk az implicit tanulást. Ez a feladat az aSRT
(alternating serial reaction time; Howard és Howard, 1997), amellyel a
korábbi változatoknál precízebben tudjuk mérni az implicit tanulás idői
dimenzióit már a gyakorlás kezdetétől, valamint el tudjuk különíteni az
általános motoros tanulást a szekvencia-specifikus tanulástól. Az
előadás bemutatja idős személyek, MCI-sek, és autista gyermekek
eredményeit probabilisztikus implicit tanulási helyzetben.
