SCIENTIFIC UNDERSTANDING IN THE TWENTIETH CENTURY

Wesley Salmon was born in 1925 in Detroit, Michigan. He received his
Ph.D. at the University of California in Los Angeles in 1950. His major
professor was Hans Reichenbach. Salmon was appointed at Brown University
(1955-63), Indiana University (1963-73) and the University of Arizona
(1973-81). At the present he is university Professor of Philosophy at
the University of Pittsburgh and President of the International Union of
History and Philosophy of Science. His publications include Limitations
of Deductivism, edited with Adolf Grunbaum, University of California
Press, 1988, Four Decades of Scientific Explanation, University of
Minnesota Press, 1990, Scientific Explanation and the Causal Structure
of the World, Princeton University Press, 1992, and Logic, Language, and
the Structure of Scientific Theories: Proceedings of the
Carnap-Reichenbach Centennial, edited with Gereon Wolters, University of
Pittsburgh Press and the Universitätsverlag Konstanz, 1993. His most
recent publication is Causality and Explanation, Oxford University
Press, 1998.
Abstract:
At the beginning of the twentieth century, many philosophers and
scientists held that explanation was outside of the scope of science -
perhaps in the realm of metaphysics or theology. Now that we are near
the end of the century, philosophers and scientists believe that science
can furnish explanation and understanding of natural phenomena. This
lecture will discuss this profound philosophical change. It will also
touch on some important practical consequences of the transformation.

Van-e celfuggvenye az evolucionak?
A termeszetes szelekcio egyreszt valamilyen ertelemben
tokeletesiti/adaptaltta teszi az elolenyeket, masreszt viszont a
kulonbozo elolenyek hallatlan valtozatossagat eredmenyezi es altalaban
nem mutatja a "fejlettebb kiszoritja a fejletlenebbet" jelenseget.
Ha az adaptaltsagot es az elet sokfeleseget egyutt akarjuk ertelmezni,
figyelembe kell vennunk, hogy az evolucio folyamatosan megvaltoztatja a
kornyezetet, s ennek kovetkezteben a kulonbozo valtozatok fitnesset. (A
fitness altalanosan a populacio exponencialis novekedesi ratajakent
ertelmezheto.) Ennek kovetklezteben az evolucionak csak lokalis, de nem
globalis celfuggvenye van.
A populacio-kornyezet rendszer egyuttes dinamikaja fixpontok
stabilitaselemzesevel egyszeruen kezbentarthato. Ez az adaptiv
dinamikanak nevezett matematikai elmelet termeszetes modon megmagyarazza
az evolucio elagazo termeszetet.

(egyebkent artalmatlan) Happy99 virust. Kompenzalando ezt a gaztettemet
itt mellekelek egy leirast, hogy hogyan lehet tole megszabadulni.
0. Nem szabad az uuencodolt Happy99.exe filet kibontani, hanem az egesz
mailt torolni kell. Ha ez mar megtortent, akkor pedig az alabbiakat kell
kovetni

Description:
This is a worm program, NOT a virus. This program has reportedly been
received through email spamming and USENET newsgroup posting. The file
is usually named HAPPY99.EXE in the email or article attachment.
When being executed, the program also opens a window entitled "Happy New
Year 1999 !!" showing a firework display to disguise its other actions.
The program copies itself as SKA.EXE and extracts a DLL that it carries
as SKA.DLL into WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory. It also modifies WSOCK32.DLL
in WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory and copies the original WSOCK32.DLL into
WSOCK32.SKA.
Removing the worm manually:
1.delete WINDOWS\SYSTEM\SKA.EXE
2.delete WINDOWS\SYSTEM\SKA.DLL
3.in WINDOWS\SYSTEM\ directory, rename WSOCK32.DLL to WSOCK32.BAK
4.in WINDOWS\SYSTEM\ directory, rename WSOCK32.SKA to WSOCK32.DLL
5.delete the downloaded file, usually named HAPPY99.EXE
Windows prevents you to do step #3 and #4 above if the machine is still
connected to the Internet.
The file "windows\system\wsock32.dll" is used whenever the machine is
connected to Internet (i.e. through dial-up or LAN connection).

Miért pont elsőrendű logikában célszerű a tudományos (pl. fizikai)
elméleteket formalizálni?
#A tudomanyos elmeletek (pl. relativitaselmelet) logikai
formalizalasakor elvben valaszthatnank tobbfele logikai rendszer kozul,
pl. kijelenteskalkulus (azaz nulladrendu logika), elsorendu logika,
magasabbrendu logika. (Persze vannak masiranyu varialasi lehetosegek is,
pl. modalis logika, kvantumlogika stb, erre majd kiterunk.) (Valamely
tudomanyos elmelet logikai formalizalasanak celja lehet pl. az elmelet
logikai analizise, vagy az elmelet jobb es melyebb megertese, vagy
Matocsi Tamas konyvenek bevezeteseben megfogalmazott tisztanlatasi
celok, vagy az elmelet logikai rekonstrukcioja, stb.) Azt a tezist
fogjuk "bizonyitani", hogy pont az elsorendu logika a jo szint, es
magasabbrendu logika hasznalata mar azt eredmenyezi, hogy
halmazelmelettol fuggetlen allitasok (pl. kontinuum hipotezis)
megjelennenek a formalizalt fizika nyelven mint (latszolagos) fizikai
allitasok. Bemutatjuk, hogy ez nem kivanatos.

kozotti kapcsolatokat, kiterunk a Field:Science without number cimu
konyv (nominalista) programjara is, sot meg a Hawking fele TOE is

Adolf Grünbaum, Andrew Mellon Professor of Philosophy of Science,
research professor of psychiatry, and chairman of the Center for
Philosophy of science at the University of Pittsburgh, is the author of
twelve books,
including Philosophical Problems of Space and Time, The Foundations of
Psychoanalysis: A Philosophical Critique (also published in Hungarian: A
pszichoanalízis alapjai, Osiris, 1996), and Validation in the Clinical
Theory of Psychoanalysis: A Study in the Philosophy of Psychoanalysis.
His offices include the presidency of the American Philosophical
Association (Eastern Division) and of the Philosophy of Science
Association,Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Science and of
the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and Laureate of
the International Academy of Humanism.
