Announcing a new journal in cognitive science:
C S Q
COGNITIVE SCIENCE QUARTERLY
An International Journal of Basic and Applied Research
Aims and Scope
The Cognitive Science Quarterly (CSQ) will publish original work in
cognitive science, including basic as well as applied research and
spanning the whole field of - empirical analysis (for example, experiments
in psychology and neurobiology), - formal theory and analysis (as used in
logic, linguistics, philosophy, etc.), - computational synthesis
(mechanisms and implemented models, employing symbol structures, neural
networks, or other means of modelling), and - applications of cognitive
science (in industry, education, and other domains).
Special emphasis will be given, however, to articles that attempt an
integration of methodologies and disciplines. Articles from the
traditional disciplines are also welcome if they are relevant to cognitive
science in general, or have implications that t ranscend disciplinary
boundaries. The bottom line is that CSQ wants to publish original work of
relevance to cognitive science as a whole.
CSQ recognises the full scope of cognitive science, comprising parts of
psychology and neuroscience, linguistics and philosophy, computer science
(AI), and real-world applications.
Analysis and synthesis of cognitive systems is another way to describe the
aim and scope of CSQ: - Analysis of cognition in people and animals,
including cognitive neuroscience - Synthesis of cognition in agents and
robots, as well as - Analysis and synthesis of cognition in workgroups and
human-computer systems.
Articles may address any topic in cognitive science, e.g.,
- learning and adaptation,
- perception and action control,
- knowledge representation and acquisition,
- thinking, reasoning, and problem solving,
- language and communication,
- cognitive ergonomics, and many others.
Articles may focus on any level of analysis, be it individual agents (or
subsystems of these), groups, or even cultural or evolutionary units, or
be it cognitive tools, natural language and other media of communication.
We welcome work that is crossing le vels of abstraction (e.g.,
symbolic-subsymbolic, individual-group, functional level-implementation,
theory-application).
CSQ recognises that the success of cognitive science as a scientific
endeavour is complemented by successful applications of our theories to
real-world problems. Applications to real problems also generate important
data, and requirements, for theoretical
development.
Therefore, CSQ will also address applied research in all fields:
- training and instruction,
- knowledge management and decision support,
- work organisation and human-computer interaction, groupware, etc.,
- and especially encourage reports on innovative applications.
CSQ will accept submissions from all over the world and hopes to find its
readers everywhere. Being based in Europe, it also attempts to bring
European research together and integrate it into the international
cognitive science community.
CSQ will be published by Hermes Science Publications, Paris and Oxford,
starting in January, 2000, comprising four issues per year. All texts will
be in English language. Electronic versions of abstracts will be publicly
available as soon as articles have
been accepted; the articles of the first issue will be made freely
accessible to everyone.

Information for Authors
CSQ is dedicated to publish original work from all fields of cognitive
science, including applied research, in English language. The work
submitted to CSQ must not have been published elsewhere, nor should it
currently be under consideration for another j ournal, book, or conference
publishing full papers. Note that distribution of a prepublication draft
in electronic or paper form is not considered as prior publication,
provided that the distributed work is clearly identified as a
prepublication draft. Fo llowing publication in CSQ, authors may use, with
proper citation, all or part of their article for their own classroom
teaching, for internal distribution within their institution, and in a
collection of their own work (e.g., on their homepage).
Review Process
Each manuscript will be thoroughly reviewed for originality and for
relevance to cognitive science, for soundness and significance, and
presentation (the copy editor at the editor's office will, however, help
you with language problems if necessary).All m anuscripts submitted to CSQ
will be reviewed by at least two reviewers. The authors may suggest
possible reviewers from the editorial board of CSQ, but the editor is free
to decide who will review the manuscript. We will attempt to make as much
use of ele ctronic communication as possible in order to speed up the
review process.
If you would like to have your work reviewed anonymously, please state
this wish clearly and unmistakably in your message accompanying the
submitted manuscript. Reviewers will then receive your manuscript purged
of authors' names, affiliations and address es.
Format of Articles
The usual article published in CSQ will have a length of 20 to 25 printed
pages (in the same format as used here), including figures, tables,
references, and the like. This amounts to around 8,000 to 10,000 words per
article. There may be exceptions, whic h should discussed with the editor
before submission. CSQ will occasionally publish short articles (up to
3,000 words) as well, if the need arises (e.g., a significant comment, or
rejoinder, or a book review).
Generally, CSQ observes the spelling rules either of British English
according to the Oxford English Dictionary or of American English
according to Webster.
CSQ favours submission in electronic formats (Word, Postscript, or PDF),
and the final manuscript prepared with MS Word, using the Guidelines for
Authors (CSQformat.DOC) and the style sheet (CSQ.DOT) available at the web

Publisher's web site: http://www.hermes-science.com
How to Submit
Send your manuscript to the editor's office either on disk or CD-ROM (PC
compatible formats: MS Word 6 or later, Postscript, or PDF; the final
manuscript must be in Word format; do not use any compression except ZIP),
or you may send it as an e-mail attac hment if it is less than 3 MB. The
title of the article and the abstract must also be contained in the email
which accompanies the article (this email is always necessary, even if the
article is not sent as an attachment). Please do not forget to complete
the Copyright Transfer Form from Hermes Science Publications (also
available at the web address given above) and send it to the editor's
office either by mail, or by fax.

Logika es relativitaselmelet
Bemutatjuk a relativitaselmelet egy lehetseges elsorendu logikabeli
felepiteset es axiomatizalasat. Egyelore a specialis
relativitaselmeletre koncentralunk, de a jelen kozelitesmodot
hosszutavon tervezzuk kiterjeszteni az altalanos esetre is. (Gyorsulo
megfigyeloink mar most is vannak.)
Tobbfele (relativitaselmeleti) axiomarendszer egyseges (egyesitett)
vizsgalatara is kiterunk, mely lehetove teszi a relativitaselmelet olyan
kulonbozo valtozatainak mint a Reichenbach - Grunbaum-fele verzio es pl.
a szokasos Einsteini verzio osszehasonlito vizsgalatat es kozos logikai
analiziset.
A Godel-fele nem-teljessegi tetelek es a "formalizalt"(vagyis elsorendu
logikaban felepitett) relativitaselmeletek kapcsolatat is megvizsgaljuk.
Kiderul peldaul hogy a relativitaselmelet legtermeszetesebb formalizalt
valtozatai eldonthetetlenek ugyan, de bizonyos egyszerusito axiomak aran
eldonthetove tehetok. Ha azonban ilyen egyszerusito axiomakat nem
teszunk fel, akkor a Godel-fele nem-teljessegi tetelek is vonatkoznak a
"relativitaselmeletekre", melyekben sajat konzisztenciajuk
megfogalmazhatova valik.
A relativisztikus geometriak es a relativitaselmeletek modelljei kozotti
dualitaselmeletet is erintik a Godel nem teljessegi vonatkozasok, ha
marad ido, akkor erre is kiterunk az eloadas vegen.
Azt is megnezzuk, hogy a relativitaselmelet mely axiomai felelosek az
elmelet kulonbozo nevezetes tulajdonsagaiert (pl. azert, hogy nem
letezhet fenynel gyorsabb megfigyelo). Folytatjuk a Friedmann altal
megkezdett un. konceptualis analizist. Azt is megemlitjuk, hogy miert
fontos pont az elsorendu logikat hasznalni.

A genofilozofiarol
-- Nehany megjegyzes a genmanipulacio lehetseges kovetkezmenyeihez --
A molekularis biologia es a genkutatas olyan perspektivak lehetosegeit
vetiti elore, amelyek meg fogjak valtoztatni az "emberrol" alkotott
felfogasunkat, es filozofiai fogalomtarunk atgondolasat is
kikenyszerithetik. Az ember biologiai melystrukturajanak
"technologizalodasi" lehetosegevel az emberi szubjektum biologiai,
pszichologiai, szociologiai, kulturalis es etikai fogalma is valtozni
fog. A gentechnologia arra fog kenyszeriteni bennunket, hogy
ujraertekeljunk olyan fogalmakat, mint szaporodas, individualitas,
tortenelem, szabadsag es szubjektivitas. Az eloadasban elsosorban a
"szabadsag" fogalmat fogom vizsgalni. Beszelhetunk meg egyaltalan emberi
szabadsagrol, ha a genek manipulaciojaval teljesen meghatarozhatjuk az
embert? Vagy talan inkabb a genmanipulatorok, vagy egy atvitt ertelemben
a genek, semmint az ember szabadsagarol van szo? Ahogy Dennett az
intencionalitas fogalmat kiterjeszti az embernel kevesbe ertelmes
lenyekre is, metaforikus ertelemben a szabadsag fogalmat is ki lehet
terjeszteni nalunk kevesbe ertelmes letezokre, peldaul a genekre. Ha a
genek "dontenek" kulonbozo alternativak kozt, akkor atvitt ertelemben
beszelhetunk a genek szabadsagarol, mint ami folulbiralja es iranyitja
az emberi szabadsagot. Pontosabban fogalmazva: ha a genmanipulator dont
a lehetseges strukturak kozt, akkor hol marad azon ember termeszetes
szabadsaga, amelynek genstrukturajat elore meghatarozzak? A genek (a
genmanipulatorok) mint "intencionalis" lenyek kodolnak bennunket

eloadas kerdese, hogy ha a teljes emberi genomot megfejtik, es ha
valamennyi gen valamennyi implikaciojat, funkciojat es hatasat
felfedezik, es ezekkel a genekkel manipulaciokat fognak vegezni, akkor
milyen fajta szabadsag, milyen fajta tortenelem, es egyaltalan milyen
fajta "emberi leny" fogja tulelni ezt a helyzetet, azaz mi marad abbol
az emberi lenybol, amit mi ma ismerunk?

Ido, kauzalitas es kauzalis torveny
Mi a viszony az ido es a kauzalitas fogalma kozott? Vajon redukalhato-e
az ido fogalma a kauzalis relacio fogalmara? A temporalis es a kauzalis
relaciok bizonyos tulajdonsagai kozti parhuzamok azt a benyomast
kelthetik, hogy igen. A kauzalis es az "elobb" ill. "utobb" tipusu
temporalis relaciok egyarant irreflexivek, aszimmetrikusak es
tranzitivek, es mindkettojukre jellemzo egy sajatos iranyultsag.
Raadasul nyilvanvalo, hogy nem fuggetlenek egymastol: legalabbis annyit
meg kell engednunk, hogy a kauzalis relacioknak mindig van valamilyen
idodimenziojuk. De vajon lehetove teszi-e mindez, hogy a kauzalis
viszonyokra redukaljuk az ido fogalmat?
Az az allaspont, miszerint az ido fogalmanak kauzalis elemzese
lehetseges, nem uj filozofiatorteneti fejlemeny. Ha a gorogokig nem is
megyunk vissza, az bizonyosan allithato, hogy Leibniz es Kant mar
probalkoztak az ido fogalmanak kauzalis elemzesevel. A redukalhatosag
problemaja azonban az utobbi nehany evben kerult az eloterbe. A
kauzalitas uj, realisztikus es probabilisztikus megkozeliteset kidolgozo
filozofusok kozul nehanyan (mindenekelott H. Mellor es M. Tooley) ugy
veltek, hogy az uj tipusu elemzes lehetove teszi az ido fogalmanak
reduktiv ertelmezeset.
Az eloadas a javasolt megkozelitest kivanja fobb vonalaiban
rekonstrualni, majd nehany nehezsegre szeretne felhivni a figyelmet.
Jelzeskeppen, a problema a kovetkezoben all. Ahhoz hogy az aszimmetrikus
temporalis relaciokat a kauzalitasra vezethessuk vissza 1. ki kell
zarnunk, hogy letezik visszamenoleges (backward) es szimultan
kauzalitas. 2. ugy tunik, ez csak akkor lehetseges, ha feltesszuk, hogy
vannak kauzalis torvenyek. Azonban 1. a mentalis kauzalitas eseteben
lehetetlennek latszik kizarni a szimultan kauzalis relaciokat 2.
legalabbis ketseges, hogy leteznek-e kauzalis torvenyek (kulonosen annyi
es olyan tipusu, amennyit es amilyet az elmeletnek felteteleznie kell).
A kauzalitas probabilisztikus ertelmezesenek elfogadasa tehat nem vonja
maga utan a temporalis relaciok redukalhatosagat.

A fejlodes utja a tokeletes intelligenciatol a hangyaig.
A mesterseges intelligenciatol az 50-es evek elejen a csodat vartak. Ugy
tunt, minden problemara valaszt tud adni, csak betaplaljuk a kerdest, es
o, mint egy orakulum, megadja a megoldast. Husz evvel kesobb mar a
legtobben azon a velemenyen voltak, hogy "a mesterseges intelligencia
halott". Pedig az elmeletek ki voltak dolgozva, tisztak, konzisztensek
es elegansak voltak. A programok pedig azt csinaltak, amit az elmeletek
koveteltek toluk - az egesz megsem valtotta be a hozza fuzott
remenyeket. A valtas a 80-as evek vegen kovetkezett be, az agensek
fogalmanak megjelenesevel. Az eloadas megmutatja, hogy miben all ez a
valtozas, miben "jobbak" az agensek, mint a hagyomanyos MI megoldasok.
Kiter arra is, hogy mik a multi-agens rendszerek, miert van rajuk
szukseg, es mik a kutatasuk fobb iranyai.
