CALL FOR PAPERS
The 5th annual meeting of the International Society for the History of
the Neurosciences (ISHN) will be held Sunday, 11 June to Wednesday, 14
June 2000, in the historic city of Providence, Rhode Island (USA).
The ISHN encourages contributions about all of the history of all of
the neurosciences, including basic and clinical specialties, ancient
and non-Western topics, technical advances, and broad social and
cultural aspects.
The structure of the meeting will be platform and poster papers as well
as thematic symposia, all to be refereed by the program committee.
There will not be parallel sessions. Platform papers are normally about
15-20 minutes in duration followed by 5-10 minutes for discussion.
Poster papers are allowed an 8 x 4 foot poster board area. Thematic
symposia consist of 3 or 4 platform papers submitted together on a
specific theme.
DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSION: 15 JANUARY 2000. The program will be
finalized by late March 2000.
ABSTRACT FORMAT: Please submit your abstract on a single sheet of
paper with medium to large font (e.g., Times New Roman 12 point or
Arial 11 point) and wide margins (1 inch or more). Do not pack the
page. Specify whether you are applying for a platform or poster
presentation.
SEND ABSTRACTS by surface mail, air mail or fax to the Chair of the
Program Committee:
S.H. Greenblatt, MD
Brown University Neurosurgery
Memorial Hospital
Pawtucket, Rhode Island 02860 USA
401-729-2784 phone
401-729-2781 fax

Papers are expected to have at least one author who is a member of the
ISHN. For information on membership, please contact the ISHN Secretary,
Duane Haines (see below).
The ISHN encourages all presenters to submit their papers to the
Society's official publication, the _Journal of the History of the
Neurosciences_.
ABSTRACTS PREPARATION ASSISTANCE: The purpose of the ISHN is to
increase the quantity and quality of research in neurohistory. Anyone
who wants assistance in the preparation of an abstract and/or paper for
this meeting is invited to contact a committee--composed of ISHN
members who are not on the Program Committee--which has been organized
to provide this service. Abstracts must be submitted to this
service well in advance of the above deadline (January 15, 2000).
Authors who use this service must still submit their abstracts to the
Chair of the Program Committee in the usual way and within this
deadline. Contact:

MEETING INFORMATION
Venue: All paper and poster sessions will be held in the Providence
Biltmore Hotel, a refurbished 1920s hotel that is affiliated with the
Grand Heritage Hotels chain. It is located at the west end of Kennedy
Plaza (11 Dorrance Street; map) in the center of Providence's restored
and energetic downtown.
Transportation: There is direct bus service (Bonanza Bus Lines) to
Kennedy Plaza from New York and Boston, and also from Boston's Logan
Airport and Rhode Island's T.F. Green Airport. Domestic air fares to
Providence are quite cheap because other airlines (American,
Continental, Delta, Northwest, United, US Airways) have to compete with
Southwest Airlines. Air Canada has commuter flights from Toronto.
Boston/Logan is well served by many direct flights to and from Europe.
The Biltmore is also only a few blocks (an easy walk without luggage)
from the Providence Amtrak Station. Amtrak hopes to have its new, high
speed train service (to and from Boston and New York) in place by
Spring 2000.
Hotel Reservations: A block of rooms has been reserved at the
Providence Biltmore Hotel at $119 per night (single or double) or $139
(small suite). Please make your reservations directly with the
Reservations Office at the Biltmore and ask for the group rate for the
ISHN. The cutoff date for these reservations is 12 MAY 2000.
Student Housing: Dormitory rooms (singles, air conditioned) will be
available on the Brown University campus at $35 per night. The Brown
campus is about a 20-25 minute walk to the Biltmore. Frequent
"trolleys" (buses) are available a few blocks from the dorms; they go
directly to Kennedy Plaza. To obtain a registration form forthese
rooms, please contact:
Patricia Henry
Director of Conference Services
101 Thayer Street
Providence, Rhode Island 02912 USA
401-863-7500 phone
401-863-7300 fax

Financial Assistance: The ISHN has allocated some limited funds to
assist with travel expenses for students (pursuing any degree,
undergraduate or graduate) whose abstracts have been accepted and who
must travel expensive distances. The Program Committee will determine
the distribution of these funds based on (1) the quality of abstracts
and (2) applicants' projected travel expenses, recognizing that
sometimes it costs more to travel modest distances than long ones. If
you wish to apply for this assistance, please include with your
abstract a short paragraph of request and explanation (with your
projected expenses) on a separate sheet.
Area Attractions: Providence is an old city (by American standards!),
with many historic neighborhoods and interesting museums and libraries.
In addition to Brown University, the Rhode Island School of Design
helps set the tone for the city's recent revival. Rhode Island is
famous for its beaches and for the late 19th century "cottages" of the
nouveaux riche in Newport. Boston is only an hour away. For more
information about things to see and do in the area, contact the toll
free visitor information number: 800-233-1636. For assistance with any
other arrangements in the area, please contact Dr. Greenblatt.

A KLASSZIKUS KONTINUUM ES A KVANTUMELMELET
KOEGZISZTENCIAJAROL
A klasszikus kontinuum, peldaul a terido vagy fizikai terek robosztus

jatszanak. Feltetelezzuk, sot neha bizonyitjuk, hogy ezek a klasszikus

tereknek a keletkezesere.
Ehelyett van egy altalanos modell (mereselmeletnek hivjak) amely
klasszikus kontinuum helyett klasszikus diszkret jellemzok keletkezeset
irja le kvantalt rendszerekben. A klasszikussag ezen fajtajanak
kontinuum keresett keletkezesi modelljenek.
Valojaban ismerunk egy modell-osztalyt, ahol idoben folytonos
klasszikus jellemzok keletkeznek kvantalt elmeletbol.

INTENTIONALITY AND THE NATURE OF LAWS
One of the central topic in recent philosophy of mind concerns the
possibility of giving a reductive analysis of intentional content. Many
think that for showing that intentional psychology is a science it is
necessary to analyze thought-content in nomic-causal terms. The lecture
attempts to show that the intentional cannot be reduced to the nomic. It
grounds its claim on the assumption that none of the available concepts
of laws allows for the assumed nomological analysis.
First we must distinguish between lawlike sentences and laws in the
metaphysical sense. If laws are but sentences of the form of a
universally quantified conditional then no reductive analysis of
intentional content can invoke the concept of a law since sentences
themselves are intentional objects. Therefore the nomological analysis
must assume that laws of nature are possible objects of scientific
discovery and not only constructs of language. The Ramsey - Lewis
analysis of laws take them to be members of "an integrated system of
truths which combines simplicity with strength in the best possible
way". Another current view of laws claims that laws are second order
facts about first order universals. The third view takes laws to be
relations between possible worlds: whatever remains invariant when we
shift from one physically possible world to another is a law of nature.
It will be shown that none of these conceptions fit the purpose of
assumed "laws about intentionality".
Finally I will argue that sciences which deal with phenomena only
globally supervenient on physics should not attempt to give nomological
explanations. (Ha mindenki beszel magyarul, akkor az eloadas magyarul

This interdisciplinary conference has drawn about 300 people from around
the world each time that it has been offered. Last year's conference was
attended by scientists from 30 countries. The conference is structured to
facilitate intense communication between its participants, both in the
formal sessions and during its other activities. As during previous years,
the millennium conference will focus on solutions to the fundamental
questions:
How Does the Brain Control Behavior?
How Can Technology Emulate Biological Intelligence?
The conference will include invited tutorials and lectures, and
contributed lectures and posters by experts on the biology and
technology of how the brain and other intelligent systems adapt to a
changing world. The conference is aimed at researchers and students of
computational neuroscience, connectionist cognitive science,
artificial neural networks, neuromorphic engineering, and artificial
intelligence.
A single oral or poster session enables all presented work to be
highly visible.
Abstract submissions encourage submissions of the latest results.

Subject: Theoretical and Experimental Neuropsychology.
The 11th annual conference on Theoretical & Experimental
Neuropsychology, TENNET XI, will be on 17 June 2000, in Montreal,
Quebec, Canada, at the Universite du Quebec, Montreal, Judith-Jasmin
Bldg., Marie-Gerin-Lajoie Hall.
The basic conference structure is (a) two thematic symposia of 3 hours
duration, followed by (b) refereed poster papers. The poster papers are
discussed after the second symposium, each afternoon. This is the first
North American neuropsychology conference that is specifically focussed
on theoretical and experimental issues.
The Tennet conference traditionally has one symposium devoted to
'history'. The theme of the symposium in the 2000-meeting (on June 17)
will be: '20th century in retrospect'
The symposium will deal with different periods of the 20th century,
concentrating on issues that seemed most prominent for these periods.
Potential Topics are:
- cytoarchitectonics (i.e. relations with specific intellectual abilities?)
- holism - Goldstein
- Zangwill and the development of neuropsychology (John Marshall)
- neurochemistry and psychopathology
- development of imaging (Anne Beaulieu?)
Who is interested in participating in this symposium and presenting a
paper on one of the topics mentioned above or perhaps one that fits
with the theme?

31st International Symposium on Robotics May 14- 17, 2000
Palais des congrs, Montral, Qubec, Canada
The ISR 2000 Technical Program Committee Co-Chairs, Professors Gregory
Dudek and Vincent Hayward, are pleased to announce that the following
Special Thematic Sessions have been accepted. Each session is being organized
individually and will combine presentations from specifically invited
presenters as well as presentations submitted through this Call for Papers.
Paper submissions for Special Thematic Sessions must follow the same
guidelines as indicated in the initial Call for Papers and the deadline for
submissions is also the same: November 15, 1999. However, please note that
when submitting a paper intended for a Special Thematic Session, it is
important to note this clearly on the title page.
Flexible Fixtureless Assembly
This session is dedicated to the development of a robust intelligent
autonomous flexible fixtureless assembly robotic workcell aimed at advancing
automated assembly processes in the manufacturing sector.

Virtualized Reality
Pierre Boulanger (Pierre.Boulanger(a)iit.nrc.ca)
Virtualized reality is a generalization of the standard visual simulation
paradigm where the model and the actions used in the simulated world are
extracted from various sensors and information retrieval systems. The
resulting visual simulation aims at an exact representation of the real world
allowing for photo realistic rendering, telepresence, remote control, and
intuitive information queries. In this seminar, we will present the state
of the art in this new field and how to use this technology for real life
applications.
Robot-Mounted Range Sensor Systems: Applications and Advances
Michael Greenspan (Michael.Greenspan(a)nrc.ca)
The combination of a range sensor mounted on a robotic positioning
device (manipulator or mobile) provides a powerful tool. This session
will explore new application areas and advances in known applications
of robot-mounted range sensor systems, with particular emphasis placed
on the processing methods that impart upon such systems an advanced
degree of flexibility and autonomy.
Applications to Operations in Harsh Terrestrial Environments
Paul Cohen (cohen(a)ai.polymtl.ca)
This session will be devoted to applications of autonomous or
telerobotic systems to operations in harsh natural environments such as
underground and surface mines, arctic regions, forestry and dump sites.
Submissions are invited on specific issues related to sensing, control,
human/machine interaction and overall system integration.
Space Robotics
Canadian Space Agency (see ISR website)
This session will include papers on robotics issues related to the
International Space Station program and mobile planetary rovers.
If you are interested in submitting a paper for any one of the
above-mentioned Special Thematic Sessions and require more information
about the scope and objectives of the session, please feel free to
communicate directly with the Organizer by Email.
