Dear All,
The CEU Department of Cognitive Science and the Center for Cognitive Computation invites
you to the following talk: “On the patterns of the brain”
Speaker: Zoltan Nadasdy

Abstract: In this lecture, I will argue that the brain leverages its intrinsic capacity to
spontaneously generate diverse activity patterns as a foundation for constructing internal
models of the world. In contrast to conventional models of cognition, these building
blocks are not derived from sensory input. I will posit that neuronal representations are
not validated through correspondence with external reality, but rather through internal
consistency and reproducibility. To support this perspective, I will review the role of
spike sequences and the replay model of memory in the hippocampus and present evidence
from the spontaneous emergence of stereotyped activity in cortical tissue cultures. I will
then introduce the phase coding model and provide empirical support for its manifestation
in the dynamics of grid cells in the human entorhinal cortex. Finally, I will outline a
revised framework for neural coding that integrates these findings into a generative
perspective on brain function.
