DETERMINISM, CHANCE, AND UNCERTAINTY
a CEU - ELTE HPS Department Workshop
Budapest, Hungary, November 20-25
========================================================================
Topics
Does necessity exist in nature, or is it merely a product of our
theories? Does science require it, or does empirical correlation work
just as well? Are determinism and chance mutually exclusive
alternatives, or is there something in between? Is evolution causal,
and if so, what causes it? Is the hypothesis of a self compatible with
determinism, and if not, which of the two should be rejected? Does
determinism mean that there is, at any given time, only one possible
future? Is indeterminism a fact about the world, or about our own
uncertainty? Has free will anything to do with it? Can science
determine whether or not the world is deterministic, or is this a
metaphysical problem?
