Abstract This paper traces the 'Institutional' turn in the philosophy of science to the failure of classical foundationalism on the one hand, and to the failure to distinguish between Descartes' methodological scepticism and his rench epistemology' on the other. In so doing, it argues that the institutional approach leads to authoritarianism, since it retains the structure and function of classical foundationalism while leaving the oundations' themselves floating in midair. And it suggests that a better response would be to maintain Descartes' resolution to doubt whatever can be doubted without contradiction, while renouncing his resolution not to accept any thesis or belief that has not been proven.
