3. MRRI Fellowship
From: Kate Lund <klund(a)aehn2.einstein.edu>
FELLOWSHIPS AVAILABLE IN COGNITIVE NEUROSCIENCE
AND REHABILITATION RESEARCH
The Moss Rehabilitation Research Institute (MRRI) is accepting applications for two-year
research fellowships. MRRI provides an opportunity for mutual collaboration with senior
investigators in the field; educational conferences, lab meetings, and weekly patient
rounds; and access to a variety of patient populations. Requirements include a PhD in a
relevant area of cognitive neuroscience or rehabilitation, training in research design,
and
applied experience in data collection and analysis. Projects are funded through Federal
agencies, such as the National Institutes of Health, as well as private foundations.
Individuals with the following interests are invited to apply for the 1997-1998
fellowships:
Attention processes - Investigation of attentional functions in the following
domains, with opportunities for cross-collaboration: 1) executive function and
dysexecutive syndromes, e.g. attention and working memory in TBI and stroke patients
using naturalistic action and dual-task paradigms; 2) hemispatial attention, neglect, and
selection of objects for action in stroke patients; and/or 3) visual attention in TBI
patients
using gaze-recording techniques. A major grant-funded initiative will develop models of
cognitive rehabilitation of spatial and temporal attention disorders through international
collaboration.
Language - Basic and applied studies of language processing, particularly
involving neurological populations, with special emphasis on 1) phonological structure and
processing; 2) syntax; 3) verbs and verb-argument structure; and/or 4) computational
models involving corpus analysis or simulations of experimental data.
Neural networks - Applications of neural networks to both theoretical and applied
problems in rehabilitation research, including 1) cognitive processing and/or acquired
language disorders, e.g. in stroke patients; 2) relationship between areas of muscle
weakness and compensatory musculoskeletal overuse symptoms in polio and other
neurologic diseases; and/or 3) prediction of functional outcomes in rehabilitation
patients.
Mentors include Drs. John Whyte, MRRI director; Myrna Schwartz, MRRI associate
director; Laurel Buxbaum; Branch Coslett; Mary Klein; Susan Kohn; and Mary Segal.
MRRI is affiliated with a number of area academic institutions and has close ties with
departments of physical medicine and rehabilitation, psychology, cognitive neuroscience,
neurology, and bioengineering at various institutions including the University of
Pennsylvania, Temple University, Lehigh University, and Drexel University.
MRRI is an equal opportunity employer. For more information contact Mary Segal, Moss

5. Australian Language and Speech Conference

Subject: Australian Language and Speech Conference
********************* FIRST ANNOUNCEMENT *********************
AUSTRALIAN LANGUAGE & SPEECH CONFERENCE
This conference will be held:
13 - 15 November, 1997
University of Melbourne, Parkville, Australia.
This is the eleventh biennial Australian Language and Speech Conference.
The conference provides a meeting place for researchers interested in the
perception, production, and comprehension of spoken and written language.
The intent is for researchers from a variety of disciplines - psychology,
linguistics, speech pathology, speech science, philosophy, special education
- to gather to discuss their research. Graduate students and practitioners
interested in research are also encouraged to attend.
Participants coming from outside Australia will be particularly welcome.
Melbourne is an elegant city - bisected by a tranquil river, fronting a wide
bay, and surrounded by the foothills of a range of densely forested
mountains. With a population of over 3 million people of wide ethnic
diversity, it is known (especially to its inhabitants) as the cultural
capital of Australia. The campus of the University of Melbourne is situated
in an inner-city suburb, close to parks, restaurants and shops, and is also
only a tram ride or short walk to the city centre.
The format of the sessions is typically 20 minute presentations with 10
minutes set aside for discussion. Three parallel sessions are usually
organised. It is hoped to have at least one key-note speaker.
A formal call for papers will be posted in early July, with a proposed
deadline for abstracts of the end of August. Suggestions for symposia will
be gladly received.

cognitive architectures and mechanisms which underly any aspect of
human language processing. Submissions which integrate experimental
findings, formal and computational models of psychological processes
are especially encouraged.
Deadline for submissions is 20 June 1997. E-mail submissions (in
plain text) are greatly preferred. Please send a 400 word abstract to
