The very first message

Dear Everybody, This is the very first message being circulated via the NeuroScan User Discussion List. The aim of it is threefold: 1) You might wander why there was no traffic on the list up to now. The reason is very simple: we just started this list. At the present there are 13 subscribers, the number is growing each day. I hope we will reach the thirties within a week or two which will then hopefully ignite the first true discussions. Till then please be patient. I would very much like to know about your ideas of what you would expect to discuss via this list (if you have anything more specific than the declared aim of the list) and of course you can already ask questions, give opinions, etc. Please be active: the list is us, noone else will make it alive. 2) I wanted to test how the software works. Please send an acknowlidgement to my personal mailbox (winkler(a)cogpsyphy.hu) so that I know that this message has reached all the present subscribers. 3) Some of the new subscribers were looking for archived letters (thinking they might have missed out on something). Since there are no archived messages this generates an error reply from the listserv program both to the originator of the request and to the manager of the listserv software. From now on, anyone looking for signs of previous traffic will at least find this letter so no more (perhaps confusing) error messages will be generated. To create a community from participants scattered all around the world takes some time. Please help us to make this period shorter by informing others about this possibility and by starting to use these facilities. ABSTRACT: Beyond Modularity attempts a synthesis of Fodor's anti-constructivist nativism and Piaget's anti-nativist constructivism. Contra Fodor, I argue that: (1) the study of cognitive development is essential to cognitive science, (2) the module/central processing dichotomy is too rigid, and (3) the mind does not begin with prespecified modules, but that development involves a gradual process of modularization. Contra Piaget, I argue that: (1) development rarely involves stage-like domain-general change, and (2) domain-specific predispositions give development a small but significant kickstart by focusing the infant's attention on proprietary inputs. Development does not stop at efficient learning. A fundamental aspect of human development ("Representational Redescription") is the hypothesized process by which information that is IN a cognitive system becomes progressively explicit knowledge TO that system. Development thus involves two complementary processes of progressive modularization and rendering explicit. Empirical findings on the child as linguist, physicist, mathematician, psychologist and notator are discussed in support of the theoretical framework. Each chapter concentrates first on the initial state of the infant mind/brain and on subsequent domain-specific learning in infancy and early childhood. They then go on to explore data on older children's problem solving and theory building, with particular focus on evolving cognitive flexibility. Throughout the book there is an emphasis on the status of representations underlying different capacities and on the multiple levels at which knowledge is stored and accessible. Finally, consideration is given to the need for more formal developmental models, and the Representational Redescription framework is compared with connectionist simulations of development.
