*Title*: *Social influences on children’s persistence*
*Abstract*: Learning requires effort, yet children can’t try hard at
everything. Every day children have to decide what’s worth their effort -
when to persist through challenges versus when to give up and move on to a
different endeavor. How do children make this decision? In this talk, I
show how infants and children leverage social information to effectively
allocate effort. First, I show that children are more likely to stick with
a challenge when provided clear feedback that their performance is
improving over time. Second, I demonstrate that infants can generalize the
value of persistence to a novel task from watching how hard an adult tries
to reach a goal. Children not only integrate information about adults’
actions, but also about their outcomes (success or failure) and testimony,
to decide how hard to try. Third, I show correlational and causal evidence
that the real-world parenting behavior of “taking over” (completing hard
tasks for children) negatively impacts children’s persistence. Finally, I
present data showing that day-to-day variation in parent praise correlates
with fluctuations in children’s naturalistic persistent behavior.
Collectively, this work elucidates the powerful effects of adults’ actions
and words on children’s effort allocation and ultimately suggests adult
behavior as an effective point of intervention for fostering children’s
persistence.

Kedves Kollégák,
Egy nemzetközi csapattal cikkgyűjteményt szervezünk a Frontiers is Psychology lapnál kogníció és fóbiák témában. Örömmel vennénk, ha lennének magyar hozzájárulói is a topic-nak, ezért megosztom itt is a felhívást. Ha bármi kérdésük van, írjanak bizalommal.
Üdvözlettel,
Zsidó András
Dear Colleagues,
In collaboration with Frontiers in Psychology (IF: 2.990, CiteScore: 3.5), Drs Carlos M. Coelho, Jakub Polák, David S. March, Michael C. Hout and I are organizing a collection of articles:
Research Topic Name: Understanding the Role of Cognitive Processing in the Acquisition and Maintenance of Phobias
Research Topic Homepage: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/34140/understanding-the-role-of…
The abstract deadline is the 25th of April 2022, and the manuscript deadline is currently set to 24th of June 2022, however we are willing to discuss extensions.
The idea is to collect high-level manuscripts from international experts, who will tackle the issue from different points of view, with the main aim to create an e-Book compilation. Manuscript contributions can be of different formats and information on article types can be found on Frontiers website. Please note that manuscripts accepted for publication are subject to publication fees, but rest assured that the Editorial Office is ready to discuss alternative options with you.
Would you be interested in contributing an article to our Research Topic?
Please feel free to contact us or the Frontiers Editorial Office (psychology.submissions(a)frontiersin.org<mailto:psychology.submissions@frontiersin.org>) for further information. You will shortly be receiving the official email from Frontiers where you can make your decision on this call for participation (to express your interest). We are looking forward to hearing from you.
Best wishes,
The Topic Editors

*Title*: *Linking Language acquisition, language evolution, and language
diversity: How social and cognitive pressures shape learning and
communication*
*Abstract*: What are the social, environmental, and cognitive pressures
that shape the evolution of language in our species? Why are there so many
different languages in the world? And how did this astonishing linguistic
diversity come about?
These are some of the most interesting questions in the fields of cognitive
science and linguistics, and represent the range of topics discussed in my
research so far. My work focuses on linking core aspects of language
acquisition, language evolution, and language diversity using a range of
novel behavioral paradigms and computational models. My goal is to (1) shed
light on the communicative pressures and cognitive constraints (e.g.,
memory limitations, efficiency) that shape social interaction and language
use in our species, and (2) to identify the social, environmental, and
cross-cultural factors (e.g., population size, network structure) that lead
to language diversity and to cross-linguistic variation.
In my talk, I will provide an overview of my research in the past six years
(including methods and results from selected projects), as well as present
future directions and ongoing work.
*About Limor Raviv*: I am a Minerva research group leader at the Max Planck
Institute for Psycholinguistics in Nijmegen, leading the Language Evolution
and Adaptation in Diverse Situations (LEADS) group. I am also a lecturer in
social interaction at the Centre for Social, Cognitive and Affective
Neuroscience (cSCAN) at the University of Glasgow.
I actively advocate for more gender equality in the programming community
(see R-Ladies), for more science communication to the public, and for open
science (you can find all my materials, code, and data freely available
online via OSF). For more info: https://www.limorravivevolang.com or find

_Abstract_
Visual rule learning in early infancy
Rule learning (RL) refers to infants’ ability to extract high-order,
repetition-based rules from a sequence of elements and to generalize
them to new items. Although some studies have first suggested that RL is
specific for language acquisition, innately predisposed to process
speech sounds, it has been recently shown that infants’ RL is
functioning in the visual domain as well. I will present evidence from a
series of studies indicating that infants can readily extract high-order
rules from sequences of visual stimuli, even if this ability is
constrained by the stimuli to be learned. I will also present some data
about the level of abstractness of this visual implicit learning
mechanism in early infancy.
