RESEARCH ENVIRONMENT
UCL is one of the world's leading multidisciplinary universities. It
is a modern, outward-looking institution, committed to engaging with
the major issues of our times. The Division of Psychology and Language
Sciences, part of the university's Faculty of Brain Sciences, is
internationally one of the largest and most prestigious aggregations
of researchers and teachers in the behavioural sciences.
The Research Department of Speech Hearing and Phonetic Sciences
(http://www.ucl.ac.uk/psychlangsci/research/speech) is one of the
largest groupings of researchers addressing the perception and
production of speech in the UK. It has outstanding facilities in a
recently refurbished building and is co-located with the Research
Departments of Linguistics, Language and Communication, and
Developmental Science. All of these departments are part of the
Division of Psychology and Language Sciences
(www.ucl.ac.uk/psychlangsci<http://www.ucl.ac.uk/psychlangsci>) within
the newly formed Brain Sciences Faculty of UCL. The department has
extensive laboratory facilities for research in speech and language
including an anechoic chamber, 7 double-walled audiometric rooms (see
http://www.ucl.ac.uk/psychlangsci/research-facilities) and a newly
installed a 64-channel EEG/ABR facility. Staff also have access to
the divisionally-hosted BUCNI fMRI scanner and through collaborative
links within the Faculty can secure access to MEG.
The department is part of a thriving research community and has close
links with many other departments and institutes within UCL,
particularly the UCL Ear Institute and the Institute of Cognitive
Neuroscience. The Division of Psychology and Language Sciences holds a
SWAN Silver award for good employment practice for women working in
science, engineering and technology.

Constraints on Visual Statistical Learning in Infancy
Abstract: Statistical learning is the process of identifying patterns of
probabilistic co-occurrence among stimulus features, essential to our
ability to perceive the world as predictable and stable. Research on
auditory statistical learning has revealed that infants use statistical
properties of linguistic input to discover structure, including sound
patterns, words, and the beginnings of grammar, that may facilitate
language acquisition. Previous research on visual statistical learning
revealed abilities to discriminate probabilities in visual sequences,
leading to claims of a domain-general learning device that is available
early in life, perhaps at birth. More recent research, however,
challenges this view. Visual statistical learning appears to be
constrained by limits in infants' attention and memory, raising the
possibility that statistical learning, like rule learning, may be best
characterized as domain-specific. Implications for theories of
cognitive development will be discussed.

In a Sea of People: The Ontogeny of Information Seeking
Abstract: Children’s discovery of knowledge through deliberate action is an important aspect of development. By actively and deliberately searching for information, children are able to access information at a moment of cognitive readiness. They are not at the mercy of happenstance and do not depend on adults’ ability to identify their interests and needs. Yet the extent to which children’s deliberate actions contribute to their knowledge depends on children’s ability to efficiently pursue their informational goals. We examine the development of this ability in several directions. How well do children choose between looking for themselves and asking others to obtain information? How sensitive are they to cues that differentiate informants from each other? The results reveal both early roots and extended growth of the ability to selectively allocate attention in several decision domains implicated in information seeking.
