MA in Logic and Theory of Science The Logic and Theory of Science MA is a two-year master's program in English at Eotvos Lorand University Budapest (ELTE). The program is open to students from all over the world with a BA or BSc degree in philosophy, mathematics, physics, computer science, linguistics, social science, and all related fields. The curriculum includes core courses in logic and formal approaches to philosophy of science, and advanced optional courses in logic, philosophy of mathematics, foundations of physics, logical methods in linguistics, philosophy of language, metaphysics, and formal models in social sciences. Students can choose a focus according to their own fields of interests. In general, the program is research oriented, aiming to prepare students for a PhD program. The program is administered by the Department of Logic in the Institute of Philosophy at Eotvos Lorand University Budapest, in cooperation with other departments and research institutes in Budapest, especially with the Algebraic Logic Group of Renyi Institute of Mathematics. The department organizes and hosts two weekly colloquia: the Logic and Philosophy of Mathematics seminar and the Theoretical Philosophy Forum. Our MA and PhD students regularly and actively participate in these events. The CEU Department of Philosophy cordially invites you to a talk (as part of its Departmental Colloquium series) by David Weberman (CEU) on All Roads Lead to Understanding Tuesday, 8 December 2015, 5.30 PM, Zrinyi 14, Room 412 ABSTRACT Understanding is a concept largely absent from contemporary epistemology in which propositional knowledge reigns supreme. I argue that we should move understanding to center stage. I identify three different paths to understanding. I begin with some recent analytic discussions of the value of knowledge and our epistemic goals to show how understanding has crept up there. I then move to recent debates concerning know-how. Surprisingly, one finds an appeal to understanding in certain versions on both sides of the know-how debate, i.e. in both intellectualists and anti-intellectualists. I’m particularly interested in what’s been called “radical anti-intellectualism” (Stephen Hetherington) where understanding is put forth not in name, but in substance. I push Hetherington’s position on know-how in a certain direction that takes it close to a Heideggerian conception of understanding – a conception which is more deeply practical than the others. I’ll indicate at the end some implications of deep practicalism for epistemology. Work in Progress The Department of Cognitive Psychology at the Institute of Psychology of the Eötvös Loránd University is organizing its annual student symposium, " Work in Progress", whose main goal is to provide a forum for students in the field of cognitive science to present their research to a wider audience of peers as well as receive feedback on their work. Participation is open for any student who has not yet received their PhD degree. The topic of the presented research must be cognitive, and pilot studies and research plans are also welcome. The presentations should be in English. A participant can choose to present their work in Hungarian at end of the event. Date and time: 14th of December, 2015 (Monday), starting at 10 o'clock Place: ELTE-PPK, Institute of Psychology, Izabella utca 46, Révész Géza room (room 301) The presentations should be 10 minutes long in the case of completed studies and 5 minutes long in the case of a pilot study or a research plan. There is no time limit for the discussion. Dear All, We would like to invite you to the next event from the ELTE Cognitive Seminar series: *Olivier Mascaro (Central European University (Budapest), Cognitive Development Center)* *The Power and Limits of Young Humans’ Smart Trust* Place: ELTE-PPK, Institute of Psychology, Izabella utca 46, Révész Géza room (room 301) Time: December 3rd, 2015 (Thursday), 11:00 Abstract: Humans have some faith in what is communicated to them, even when their informants are complete strangers, who could be mistaken or lying. Where does this trust come from? Although this question was raised more than two centuries ago (e.g. Hume, 1748; Reid, 1764), it remains largely unanswered, in great part because of a lack of appropriate empirical evidence. This presentation targets directly this question by investigating the development of trust in testimony during late infancy, toddlerhood and childhood. I will present evidence suggesting that from 15 months of age, infants’ trust in communication is both strong and smart. It is strong enough to make infants disbelieve what they directly perceived. It is smart enough to include conceptually rich expectations about communicated information, that roughly map onto two classic philosophical definitions of truth: correspondence and coherence theories (e.g. Descartes, 1639; Davidson, 1986). Against the widespread view that young humans become more skeptical as they grow up, I will provide evidence suggesting that infants’ disposition to be trusting increases during the toddler years. Improved communicative abilities and additional opportunities to learn from others could support this developmental stage of heightened trust in communicated information, the “Trusting Twos”. Young human’s disposition to frame communication as an exchange of reliable information supports cultural transmission and learning at large. Yet, I will argue that it also explains young children’s difficulties in lying and in being vigilant towards deception. To some extent, it may also contribute to children’s difficulties in interpreting games and stories involving deceivers and dupes, such as standard false belief tasks. Host: dr.
