I am interested in the evolution and psychological underpinnings of sociality. More specifically, I am investigating the nature of other-regarding concerns in governing our social behaviour. To investigate how people come to know and care about the welfare of others, I use ideas from game theory and methods from experimental economics, as well as standard psychological approaches, to study nonhuman primates and children.

Dear Colleagues,
I am looking for a postdoc for a Polish National Science Center-funded
project on the impact of short-term and long-term experience on language
processing.
I would be grateful if you could please share the announcement below with
anyone you know who might be interested.
Best wishes,
Zofia Wodniecka

Zofia Wodniecka, Ph.D.
Institute of Psychology, Jagiellonian University
Ingardena 6; 30-060 Kraków, Poland
Psychology of Language and Bilingualism Lab (langusta.edu.pl/en)
====
*Applications are invited for a full-time post-doctoral position on
cognitive science and bilingualism.*
*January 30th, 2017*
Applications are invited for a full-time post-doctoral position in the
Psychology of Language and Bilingualism Lab (langusta.edu.pl/en) at the
Institute of Psychology, Jagiellonian University in Krakow, Poland. The
position is funded by the Polish National Science Centre grant*
“Competition or coordination? Impact of short-term and long-term language
experience on language regulation and cognitive functions in bilinguals”*
(PI: Dr. Zofia Wodniecka). The project investigates Polish-English
bilinguals both in Poland and in the UK; some knowledge of Polish will be
an asset, but is not essential. Most importantly, we are looking for an
innovative postdoctoral candidate with a background in cognitive
psychology, psycholinguistics, or linguistics who will play a key role in a
project examining how different forms of language experience (including
language immersion) influence language processing. The project’s
methodology combines behavioral, ERP and eye-tracking paradigms. The
project will be carried out in collaboration with prof. Antonella Sorace at
the University of Edinburgh. The postdoctoral scholar will be stationed at
the Jagiellonian University in Krakow, but a substantial amount of testing
will be carried out in Edinburgh and hence the position requires readiness
for mobility.
*Requirements:*
Candidates must have a Ph.D in Psychology, Neuroscience, Experimental
Linguistics, or a related field, or they must have completed all of the
requirements for a Ph.D by the time of appointment. Other requirements
include: strong scientific record (including high quality dissertation,
publications in peer-reviewed journals), extensive experience in planning
and conducting experiments in cognitive psychology and psycholinguistics,
preferably in the areas connected to the topic explored in the project
(language comprehension and production, executive functions, etc.), good
knowledge of statistics, fluency in English (knowledge of Polish will be an
asset but is not a must), and a documented ability to work well both
independently and in a team. Prior experience with the eye-tracking and/or
EEG techniques is strongly preferred. Strong programming and statistical
skills is a plus.
The postdoctoral scholar will be expected to design, coordinate and conduct
experiments as well as statistical analyses. They will present data at
scientific meetings, write manuscripts, participate in lab meetings and
events, and engage in the training of junior lab members. There will be
many opportunities to interact with other research labs at the Institute of
Psychology (http://www.psychologia.uj.edu.pl) and beyond. The initial
appointment will be for three years, with the possibility of renewal up to
54 months in total. Salary and benefits are based on the National Science
Center guidelines, the total gross monthly salary (including benefits; so
called “brutto brutto”) will be 7000PLN.
*Applications should include:* 1) a CV; 2)a cover letter with a statement
of research experience, interests and the motivation to contribute to the
project; 3) two letters of recommendation; 4) a copy of the diploma. All
applications should be sent to Dr. Zofia Wodniecka at
zofia.wodniecka(a)uj.edu.pl.
*Apart from the documents mentioned above, the candidate will be required
to fill in Polish application forms. Therefore if you are interested in the
position, contact the PI as soon as possible to receive assistance with
their preparation.*
Review of applications will begin immediately and continue until March
15th, 2017 or until the position is filled. The start date of the
appointment is flexible, although mid 2017 is preferable. Interviews with
selected candidates will be held either at the Institute of Psychology or
via Skype. The results of the application process will be announced no
later than April 20th, 2017. For more information about this position,
please contact Dr. Zofia Wodniecka at zofia.wodniecka(a)uj.edu.pl.

Dear Gergo,
I’m looking for a motivated and talented postdoc to come and work with me on a project investigating the development of executive functions in infants and young children. The position is for 4 years. It would be great if you could share this with people you know who may be interested in applying. More details can be found here:

The Developmental Origins of Knowledge of Objects: The Systems and Their Signature Limits
What is the nature of infants' earliest abilities to track briefly unperceived physical objects? And how, over the course of development, do infants get from these early forms of cognition to knowledge of simple facts about particular physical objects? The leading, best supported conjecture is that infants' core knowledge of objects consists in a system of object indexes (Leslie et al. 1998; Scholl and Leslie 1999; Carey and Xu 2001; Scholl 2007). Accepting this conjecture confronts us with two challenges. The first is to explain a pattern of discrepancies involving multiple measures (violation-of-expectations vs manual search, for instance) and multiple types of disappearance (occlusion vs endarkening). The second challenge concerns the interface between core knowledge and thought. Object indexes have only limited, indirect influences on thought and action. How then could their operations explain the findings of violation-of-expectation experiments? And how could they play a role in explaining the emergence, in development, of knowledge of physical objects? This talk introduces the challenges and proposes a novel, two-part response. We should recognise that infants, like adults, sometimes represent objects motorically. Core knowledge is not one thing but a composite of two things that are, to an interesting degree, independent of each other: object indexes and motor representations. Further, object indexes can give rise to metacognitive feelings. The developmental transition from core knowledge of objects to knowledge proper may have such a protracted developmental course because only metacognitive feelings connect core knowledge to knowledge proper.
We are looking forward to see you at the talk!
