Title:Learning from action observation: the importance of communication
over efficiency
Abstract:Ostensive cues, such as eye-contact or calling the other’s name
are typically used to inform the addressee about our communicative
intention. Furthermore, they can elicit an expectation of relevance
about the communicated information, both in the case of adults and
infants. During observational learning, would this expectation of
relevance induce a bias to preferentially learn the communicated action
demonstration, even at the expense of its observed efficiency? In my
talk, I will present a series of studies testing whether toddlers and
young children learn from their own observation of efficiency, assessed
by statistical information on reliability of interventions, or from
communicatively presented demonstrations, when these two potential types
of evidence are contrasted with each other. The findings demonstrate
that communicative sanctioning of reliability may override statistical
evidence for young learners. Furthermore, our recent evidence with great
apes also suggests that ostensive demonstration can elicit an
expectation of relevance, potentially leading to a preference to learn
from communication, as human children do.

ABSTRACT:
During conversational interaction, speakers will use a variety of nonverbal vocal strategies to help them achieve pragmatic goals. These vocal signals often accompany verbal phenomena such as indirect speech, which often can be construed as a form of verbal play. One common such signal is laughter, which evolved from play vocalizations in our primate ancestors, and retains part of this communicative function in our everyday conversational interactions. Here I will describe some different lines of research that reveal some of the communicative complexities of laughter, verbal play, and social interaction. Overall this work points to one possible connection between linguistic pragmatics and nonhuman animal communication.
We look forward to seeing you there!

Title:Age-related changes in the auditory processing and in the balance
between attention and distraction
Abstract:In order to interact with our environment in an adaptive way,
we need to filter task-relevant events while ignore task-irrelevant
ones. However, such a perfect attention set cannot be established: rare,
unexpected sensory events capture our attention, in other words, we get
distracted. Numerous studies suggest that this balance between attention
and distraction changes during the lifespan; specifically, older adults
are associated with deteriorated frontal lobe functions which result in
a decreased ability to inhibit the processing of irrelevant information,
leading to greater susceptibility to distraction. Moreover, aging is
also characterized with declined sensory processing, further
contributing to decreased performance in different tasks. My talk is
going to focus on the electrophysiological correlates of the interaction
between sensory processing and its top-down modulation during aging in
the auditory modality. I will also discuss these processes in context of
the behavioral performance, highlighting the role of compensation and
motivational factors.
