Dear Cognitive Folks,
The next Fluencia Party will be on 9th February (Friday) starting at 8.00pm
in Élesztő (Tűzoltó utca close to Corvin metro station).
Info: https://www.facebook.com/events/2013110232260580/
Fluencia is a monthly organized informal "jamboree" for cogsci-,
psychology-related students (undergrads, grads), professors, researchers
from many different universities in Hungary. The idea and motivation are to
facilitate interactions, communication, collaboration among researchers
working here, get to know others and others' interests, topics, etc. And,
of course, to have some drinks and fun in a friendly environment.
Everybody is welcome to attend! If you have any further questions, do not
hesitate to ask.
All the best,
Dezso

Title:Age-related changes in the auditory processing and in the balance
between attention and distraction
Abstract:In order to interact with our environment in an adaptive way,
we need to filter task-relevant events while ignore task-irrelevant
ones. However, such a perfect attention set cannot be established: rare,
unexpected sensory events capture our attention, in other words, we get
distracted. Numerous studies suggest that this balance between attention
and distraction changes during the lifespan; specifically, older adults
are associated with deteriorated frontal lobe functions which result in
a decreased ability to inhibit the processing of irrelevant information,
leading to greater susceptibility to distraction. Moreover, aging is
also characterized with declined sensory processing, further
contributing to decreased performance in different tasks. My talk is
going to focus on the electrophysiological correlates of the interaction
between sensory processing and its top-down modulation during aging in
the auditory modality. I will also discuss these processes in context of
the behavioral performance, highlighting the role of compensation and
motivational factors.

by Hanna Marno and Bálint Varga | BCCCD 2022 Ch airs
Dear all,
Due to renewed increase in the number of COVID-19 infections<https://graphics.reuters.com/world-coronavirus-tracker-and-maps/countries-a…> and continuing uncertainties regarding the underlying trends and potential pandemic-related regulations in Hungary, the organizing committee has made the difficult decision to hold a fully virtual BCCCD meeting once again, forgoing the previously announced hybrid option. This means that the conference will take place exclusively online, between 10 and 14 January 2022. We are very sorry that we won’t be able to host you in Budapest, but given the aforementioned circumstances, we cannot confidently plan a safe and well-attended local event.
The presentation formats will be adjusted to the online constraints the following way. All accepted poster submissions will transform to virtual presentations. Virtual presenters will have their dedicated channel on an online platform, with their material uploaded directly into the channel, so that attendees will have access to the presentations that they can discuss in the same space. Additionally, presenters will be asked to be online in their channel during assigned sessions, so that participants in different time zones can attend each other's presentation slots. Accepted paper submissions will either move to one of the online live paper sessions, or, in case they were also submitted for poster sessions but not selected to be included in the paper sessions, will also be transformed to virtual presentations. Similarly, accepted virtual presentations will either move to an online paper session or remain virtual presentations. Finally, all accepted symposia (whether they were submitted to the on-site or the online part of the conference) will be held online, and we will offer the option to the contributors of not selected symposia to turn their talks into virtual presentations. We will notify the corresponding author of each submission about acceptance and the format of their presentation by the end of this week.
[Chenges in presentation formats]
We hope that in spite of this change in format, BCCCD22 will prove to be a professionally stimulating and memorable experience.

ABSTRACT: This talk will introduce the Ecological Learning framework, which focuses on children's ability to adapt and tailor their active learning strategies to the particular structure and characteristics of a learning environment. In particular, I will present the results of several seminal studies indicating that efficient, adaptive search strategies emerge around 3 years of age, much earlier than previously assumed. This work highlights the importance of developing age-appropriate paradigms that capture children's early competence to gain a more comprehensive and fair picture of their active learning abilities. Also, it offers a process-oriented theoretical framework that can accommodate and reconcile a sparse but growing body of work documenting children's active and adaptive learning.
We look forward to seeing you there!

by DUCOG - Dubrovnik Conference on Cognitive Science
Dear All,
We are pleased to announce the XIII.
Dubrovnik Conference on Cognitive Science, which is devoted to the topic of
Cognitive and Functional Perspectives on Emotions.
The conference will take place between 19 and 22 May 2022 in
Dubrovnik, Croatia.
Emotions are at the core of the human experience. After long having
been marginalized in the study of cognition, affective phenomena are
increasingly moving into the focus of researchers from across
cognitive science.
In spite of this renewed interest, however, there remains much
disagreement about the evolutionary origins, functional profiles,
and universality of
human emotions. This conference aims to bring together researchers
from a range of diverse fields to present and discuss state-of-the-art
research about the mechanisms and functions of emotions in our
species.
Invited speakers will include:
- Carlos Crivelli — De Montfort University, UK
- Guillaume Dezecache — Université Clermont Auvergne, France
- Alan Fiske — University of California, Los Angeles, US
- Debra Lieberman — University of Miami, US
- Lawrence Ian Reed — New York University, US
- Disa Sauter — University of Amsterdam, Netherlands
For more information please visit: https://ducog.cecog.eu
or email us at: ducog(a)cecog.eu
As of Fall 2021, we are planning to hold a traditional,
in-person conference in Dubrovnik. Please keep in mind that DUCOG 2022
is contingent on the global pandemic conditions.
In case we are unable to hold the conference in
Dubrovnik, we will announce further details before registration starts.
Poster abstract submissions will be open between 1 January and
28 February 2022.
On behalf of the organisers,
Denis Tatone

Title: How arousal modulates cognitive processes: using falling asleep
people to learn how thinking fragments
Abstract:Throughout the day our level of arousal and alertness varies,
affecting cognitive performance. Chernobyl, work-related mistakes, when
you submit an email and then regret it, a myriad of examples of changes
that illustrate how alertness modulates the way we think and do things.
In the Consciousness and Cognition Lab these last 10 years we have been
characterising cognitive control and perceptual decision making when
people transition from full alert and attentive to relaxed and drowsy.
Low Alertness makes people slower and more variable, but depending on
the cognitive processes (via task), the level of mistakes may or may not
change. The sharpness of a decision seems to decrease and we think this
may be explained by a relaxation of the criterion, the strictness of
what is decided with lower alertness, and that the efficiency in the
accumulation of evidence to reach the decision is what may be driving
these changes. It is this arousal internal fluctuation that allows us to
characterise cognitive processes in a pseudocausal manner.
