Dear All,
The CEU Department of Cognitive Science cordially invites you to its next extraordinary talk by:
Zoltan Nadasdy (University of Texas at Austin, HCA Neuroscience, ELTE)
Date: Thursday, March 21, 2019 - 17:10-18:40 (note the special timing!)
Host: Jozsef Fiser
Location: Department of Cognitive Science, CEU, Oktober 6 street 7, room 101.
Title: "Deciphering the neural code of human spatial awareness"
Abstract:
The neuronal activity in our brain has a dual nature. One is characterized as discrete and conveys information while the other is continuous, periodic and we don't exactly understand its function. When these two forms of activity engage in a coordinated interplay their interaction generates a spatially periodic maps recognized as grids, anchored to the environment and guiding us during spatial navigation. In this lecture I will discuss new results from the medial temporal lobe of human subjects that illustrate the emergence of conspicuous maps, which may serve us as a neural coordinate system for our spatial awareness.

Title: Visual confidence in perceptional decision making
Abstract: Visual confidence refers to our ability to predict the correctness of our perceptual decisions. Knowing the limits of this ability, both in terms of biases (e.g. overconfidence) and sensitivity (e.g. blindsight), is clearly important to approach a full picture of perceptual decision making. The measurement of visual confidence with the classical method of confidence ratings presents both advantages and disadvantages. In recent years, we have explored an alternative paradigm based on confidence forced-choice. In this paradigm, observers have to choose which of two perceptual decisions is more likely to be correct. I will review some behavioural results obtained with the confidence forced-choice paradigm. I will also present two ideal observers based on signal detection theory, one that uses the same information for perceptual and confidence decisions, and another one that has access to additional information for confidence. These ideal observers help us quantify the limitations of human confidence estimation.

Dear Cognitive Folks,
The next Fluencia Party will be on 22th March (Friday) starting at 7.45pm
in Ankert (Paulay u 33, close to Opera).
Info: https://www.facebook.com/events/296636857680798/
Fluencia is a monthly organized informal "jamboree" for cogsci-,
psychology-related students (undergrads, grads), professors, researchers
from many different universities in Hungary. The idea and motivation are to
facilitate interactions, communication, collaboration among researchers
working here, get to know others and others' interests, topics, etc. And,
of course, to have some drinks and fun in a friendly environment.
Everybody is welcome to attend! If you have any further questions, do not
hesitate to ask.
All the best,
Dezso

Title: An early emerging group-bias in the construal of others
Date: Wednesday, 13 March 2019
Time: 17:00-18:30
Location: Department of Cognitive Science, CEU, Oktober 6 st. 7, room 10
Abstract:
Human history has been plagued by violent inter-group conflicts. Such conflicts are commonly associated with attitudinal group biases – particularly, a tendency to favor “ingroups” over “outgroups” – manifest in adults and children. In this talk, I will present evidence on an early emerging conceptual group bias that arguably gives rise to such discriminatory attitudes. In particular, I will present developmental studies showing that whereas ingroup members tend to be construed as individuals, outgroup members are construed as category exemplars. I will further argue that this conceptual bias does not derive exclusively from cognitive-perceptual processes, but moreover from motivational ones.
We are looking forward to see you.

Dear All,
Positions for 15 Early Stage Researchers (ESRs; doctoral students) are offered in a project aiming to study neurodevelopmental disorders (NDD), which emerge early in development and result in long-term disability, compromising the quality of life of millions of Europeans.
Applicants from all relevant academic disciplines are encouraged to apply, including psychology, neuroscience, data science, and related disciplines. The selected doctoral students will enroll in the graduate school of the host institution and work towards their Ph.D.
The multidisciplinary Neo-PRISM-C project is funded by the Horizon 2020 Marie Skłodowska-Curie action of the European Union. It is part of the Innovative Training Network (ITN) actions (http://www.neoprismc.org/).
